An anniversary and a big beer announcement

by Nick Trougakos Published: September 9, 2013

On this day five years ago, a novice beer writer put fingers to keyboard and typed out the very first post on The Thirsty Beagle blog.

I didn’t really know what I was doing at the time — didn’t homebrew, didn’t know just how many beers are out there, and certainly didn’t own a sliver of the beer knowledge I have now — but now, five years and nearly 1,200 blog posts later, I’m still typing away.

It’s been a fun ride for sure; I’ve met a ton of really great people and tried a bunch of great beer. I shared a lot of beer information that hopefully people wouldn’t have found otherwise. And so I think it’s fitting to mark the occasion today by sharing another new bit of beer information that I’m really excited about:

The fifth annual ZooBrew beer tasting is set for Sept. 27 and this year’s event will feature an exclusive beer from Roughtail Brewing made especially for the event.

Roughtail and ZooFriends have teamed up to create Bamboo IPA.

This draft-only offering will be available only for two nights: It will of course be available on Sept. 27 at ZooBrew, and it will also be featured at the TapWerks pint night on Sept. 26, with a portion of proceeds from Bamboo IPA sales that night going to the Oklahoma Zoological Society.

Roughtail brewmaster Tony Tielli said he used whole-leaf, dried bamboo in the boil and New Zealand hops for a well balanced, drinkable IPA that lets the bamboo be the star.

The bamboo is a natural tie-in for the zoo, which is landscaped with bamboo and uses the plant to feed some of its animals.

Oklahoma Zoological Society Executive Director Dana McCrory said the group is excited to work with Roughtail on the project.

“ZooBrew guests will be some of the only people in Oklahoma that get to taste this special brew,” McCrory said. “It adds even more excitement to this fun event!”

So if you want a chance to try a really unique beer and support a good cause, get out to ZooBrew on the 27th and TapWerks on the 26th.
