Another effort to soften up football

Regarding Jim Litke's “NCAA on right track with new rule” (Associated Press commentary, Feb. 15): We live in a world that's constantly trying to protect us from ourselves. How did we ever survive growing up without wearing a bicycle helmet or playing football without all of the rules against hard physical hits? The new rule the NCAA is proposing, to automatically eject a player if the official decides that the player targeted with his helmet, is another step in trying to “woosify” the game. The NFL penalizes helmet-to-helmet tackles; instant replay shows that a lot of times the offending player actually hit with a shoulder.

If we keep trying to take the physical contact out of the game, we'll be left with the equivalent of flag football.
