Anouma loses 1st half of African election appeal
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — FIFA executive committee member Jacques Anouma has failed to get an interim ruling to become a Confederation of African Football presidential candidate after incumbent Issa Hayatou changed election rules.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Thursday that it rejected Anouma's provisional request because his national federation, Ivory Coast, also needed to join the case.
CAS said it will now create an arbitration panel for the main hearing in Anouma's appeal.
"There will definitely be a debate and a CAS decision in this case," a statement posted on Anouma's official website said.
Anouma has criticized longtime CAF leader Hayatou's "scandalous" tactics to block his planned election challenge at a March 10 vote in Marrakech, Morocco.
Hayatou, a FIFA vice president from Cameroon, engineered rule changes last September which allow only voting members of the CAF board to stand.
Anouma has had non-voting rights since CAF member nations elected him to his FIFA seat in 2007.
Liberian football leaders also tried to challenge the new rules at the Switzerland-based court, but that appeal was dismissed because the correct brief was not filed.
