— Members of an anti-abortion group carried signs in front of Norman High School on Wednesday, sparking a counter protest from some who opposed their appearance on campus.

“Frankly, I’m disgusted by this. This is not the time and place for this. What they are doing is not OK,” said Elizabeth Personette, 17, a high school senior.

Personette said she objected to the group’s signs that displayed graphic photographs of dead babies and bloody body parts.

“Thirteen- and 14-year-olds don’t need to be seeing this kind of thing,” she said.

Protester Russell Hunter said he and other members of the Abolitionists Society of Oklahoma believe a high school “is one of the most appropriate places” to protest abortions.

“It’s a little frustrating to protest outside an abortion clinic, where the decision to get an abortion already has been made. We want to reach women before they go down that path,” Hunter said.

Hunter was one of four protesters who picketed at noon Wednesday. On other days, he said, as many as 15 had shown up to picket. The group began protesting Monday, and members say they will continue probably through Friday.

“We believe abortion destroys lives. We’re here to protest, to engage in conversation about it, to educate and answer questions. We are not here to confront anyone,” Hunter said.

Parent Valarie Lambert said she and her daughter joined others in a counter protest Wednesday “because I’m tired of them being at my child’s school. I’m tired of their harassment. These are kids, and they shouldn’t be subjected to this.”
