BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Customs and Border Protection officials gave tours Wednesday of Border Patrol facilities in Texas and Arizona that hold thousands of immigrant children waiting to be transferred to shelters across the country.

The unaccompanied minors were caught entering the country illegally amid a surge of immigration from Central America in recent weeks. They are being held at the facilities in Brownsville, Texas, and Nogales, Arizona, until they can be processed.

From there, the children and teens will be sent to shelters for several weeks as the government tries to reunite them with family members in the U.S. The network of some 100 shelters around the nation has been over capacity for months, caring for more than 7,600 children.
