Arrested Oklahoma City officer's house accessed despite police guard

Someone who apparently had a key to a locked part of an arrested Oklahoma City police officer's house gained access to the residence overnight Thursday despite a patrol officer posted outside to keep watch, police said.

Sgt. Maurice Anthony Martinez was arrested Wednesday on complaints of lewd acts with a child under 16 and forcible sodomy.

Box said he and Martinez have not discussed what was behind the locked door or why it was locked.

Electrical power was cut off to the house, but police were not able to determine how or why, Stewart said. Power was not restored until police turned the house back over to Martinez on Friday.

Police called Box on Friday to tell him someone had gotten into the house overnight, Stewart said.

Martinez and his family do not know if any items were taken by whoever got into the house because police have not filed court papers indicating what items were taken during the search, Box said. If any missing items are not found on the search warrant return, those items may have been stolen by the intruder, he said.

Police told Martinez to file a burglary report if he thinks anything was stolen, Stewart said. Investigators aren't sure if anything was taken from the locked portion of the home because they don't know what was inside before the intruder got in.

Investigators aren't sure of the intruder's intent, Stewart said.

“We certainly think it was someone who was familiar with the residence, knew that the back door was not able to be locked and also had a key to be able to get into the door that was locked with the deadbolt,” Stewart said.

Two family pets, an iguana and a catfish, died over the weekend, Box said.

The family notified police of the pet deaths Sunday, but the pets were still alive when police concluded their search Friday, Stewart said. Martinez was allowed to collect other pets from the residence before the search, but chose not to take the iguana or the catfish.

Two 16-year-old boys in state custody because of the allegations against Martinez — their adoptive father — ran away from a group outing to Skate Land in Midwest City on Friday night. One of the boys showed up at his biological mother's house and was returned to the state-run group home about 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said.

The second teen did not report to school on Monday, and officers were still looking for him, Clabes said.

Sister of arrested officer says he's innocent, devastated

The sister of the Oklahoma City police officer arrested on sexual abuse complaints said her bother is innocent, but the family fears he never will be able to recover personally and professionally even if he is exonerated.

Police Sgt. Maurice Martinez has not spoken publicly since his arrest Wednesday on complaints of lewd acts with a child younger than 16 and forcible sodomy, and defense attorney Irven Box said he won't allow Martinez to speak with the media. He referred questions for the family to Martinez's sister, Nicole Barkalow.

“It's unbelievable,” Barkalow, 34, of Choctaw, said of the allegations against Martinez, who has cared for about 60 foster children in the past 10 years. “All of the kids that he has taken care of, they're extremely upset. They're distraught.”

Martinez is devastated by the allegations, Barkalow said.

“This has not only ruined his reputation, it's definitely ruined his career,” Barkalow said. “How do you go back after this? Your face has been plastered all over the media outlets.”
