Art Review: Taos, New Mexico artist Clive R. Tyler shows his work at the Adelante! Gallery

A red glow, perhaps of evening, pervades a similar composition, the same size, of a moose looking away from us, across a lake, toward slightly more dramatic mountains, in "Western Meadows.” Other, equally well-handled animal subjects include "Deer Watering,” a depiction of two does fording a river under long branches, and a smaller winter scene of four buffalo, hunkering down in "North Yellowstone.”

Capturing "Winter’s Glow” on the snow-clad banks of a rippling river, bending between tall evergreen trees, is his 22-by-28-inch work of that title. An impressionistic blur of blue lupine — barely there — supplies subtle visual punctuation for a boldly rendered stand of tall white aspen trunks in "Aspens & Lupine,” another outstanding composition.

Offering a nice change of pace are five understated seaside studies of "Beach Grass,” "Sunset Cliffs,” a "Morning Sand Dune,” the "Sea & Wind” of a shore line, and tides flowing over rocks. Adelante! Gallery director Cynthia Wolf said these five smaller works were done at beaches in California and Florida.

The exhibit of pastel landscapes by Tyler, who lived for some 20 years in Fort Collins, Colo., before moving to Taos, N.M., is highly recommended during its run through June 14.
