Purcell is a city of about 5,600 with a rural economy. It is south of Oklahoma City along Interstate 35. It is known as "The Quarter Horse Capital of the World."

It is the county seat of McClain County, which the district attorney says is a quiet, peaceful area where homicides rarely occur.
