Yukon OKs Renaming Of Street

YUKON - One of Yukon's main thoroughfares was renamed Tuesday night by the city council to honor native son and country singing star Garth Brooks.

The council in a 4-1 vote renamed 11th Street, also known as Cemetery Road and State Highway 92, as Garth Brooks Boulevard.

The name change will be effective from State Highway 66 south to the city limits, which lie just south of Interstate 40, the council decided.

Councilman Frank Wagner cast the lone "no" vote, saying he had constituents who did not want any streets renamed.

Mayor Dave O'Bannon said the change was to honor Brooks and to spur economic development.

City manager Stan Griel said some people have expressed a fear that the street signs might be stolen.

The city is considering getting Brooks permission to sell the street signs with his name on it.

Only signs suspended from street lights will be put up at first, officials said. BIOG: NAME:
