STILLWATER — The restaurant famed for its cheese fries, burgers and animated characters is still offering a unique atmosphere for all ages.

Eskimo Joe’s, 501 W Elm in Stillwater, opened July 21, 1975, by Stan Clack and Steve File, originally opened as a bar.

It wasn’t until 1984, when the legal drinking age was raised from 18 to 21, that Joe’s became a full-service restaurant.

Clark, who is now the sole owner of Joe’s, said File created the name, while Clark was a little leery. But that all changed when the logo was created.

“Once we got our logo, it was designed by a freshman commercial art student, I fell in love with the name because it fit so well with ‘Eskimo Joe’ and ‘Buffy,’ ” Clark said.

“The thing that I think is so special about it is that ‘Eskimo Joe’ has that great big smile and I think that can draw you in and its very warm feeling then of course it’s a boy and his dog.

“That ‘boy and his dog’ theme has universal appeal. Whether or not you can read the words ‘Eskimo Joe’s’ in the English language, I think that logo draws you in. The No. 1 seller is the Joe’s special, which includes the famous burger and fresh cut fries.
