SANGER, Texas — The chicken is mouth-watering. The sides are incredible. Whatever good you've heard about Babe's Chicken Dinner House is true. And so is the two- to three-hour drive.
Babe's is a small chain of restaurants in north Texas. However, many Oklahomans, with a hankering for really good fried chicken and who aren't too fussy about driving to get it, will head south on Interstate 35 to Sanger, just over the Texas border. But be forewarned. If you're passing through Sanger during the day, Babe's isn't open for lunch. Just dinner. There is a sister restaurant in Frisco, north of Dallas. Babe's "Menu Truths"
Menus always sound so perfect. But Babe's keeps it real, and provides a humorous printed key to menu descriptions:
Poultry = chickens or anything that looks a lot like a chicken
Imported = brought to us by a Mack Truck
Succulent Pieces = everything except the neck, feet and back
Marinate = soak
Secret Spices = salt water
Tenderness = it can be chewed
Healthier for you = at least that is what they say this year
Perfection = it's done!
