Quarterback watch
With just three scholarship quarterbacks on campus, the position will be a focus of next year's recruiting class.

An early name to watch: Landry Jones out of Artesia, N.M.

Jones is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect with a big arm. He passed for 3,433 yards and 45 touchdowns. He completed 68 percent of his passes with just nine interceptions in 310 attempts.

The Sooners are among the teams Jones is talking about, but there's plenty of competition. He already holds scholarship offers from UCLA, Arizona, Wisconsin, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia, New Mexico and New Mexico State.

Tulsa time: OU was placed in an awkward spot with ESPN wanting to shift its game at Tulsa from Saturday to Friday night, where it forces competition with the state's high schools.

The contest is Tulsa's home game. And the national telecast represents an optimum opportunity for exposure for the Golden Hurricane, who rarely — if ever — live in such a spotlight.

Declining to play on Friday might have strained relations between the athletic departments, perhaps even resulted in a lawsuit.

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione did his best to diffuse the situation by going to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association last October to prep them for the possibility.

Before any future series is established with Tulsa, Castiglione said he might require wording in a contract that forbids playing on a Friday night.
