DAYTON , Ohio — She was not going to wear the skirt.

Armintie Price wanted to play basketball. And she wanted to abide by her mother's edict, and honor her Pentecostal background.

But the skirt — long and flowing, "like something from back in the day” — was too much. The ninth-grader sat crying in the locker room.

"If this is what it takes,” Price told her mother, "I'm not playing.”
