The Oklahoma Publishing Company (OPUBCO) and Griffin Communications, L.L.C. announced today that OPUBCO has purchased Griffin's interest in NewsOK.com, the joint Web site for The Oklahoman and News 9. Terms of the sale were not released.

The site will continue to represent both organizations while News 9 creates its new site, scheduled to launch in early 2008.

David Thompson, Publisher of The Oklahoman, and David Griffin, President of Griffin Communications, L.L.C. both say the split was friendly and allows each company to build a distinctive brand on the Internet.

"Together, our staffs have built an award winning Web site that more Oklahomans use than any other media site in the state," Thompson said. "But, the Internet has become more central to our core businesses and we realize that each of our strong brands need autonomy."

"NewsOK.com has been a great strategic alliance for both companies for five-and-one-half years," said Griffin. "But the opportunities online are changing rapidly and our business models must change accordingly."

Though the NewsOK.com partnership will dissolve, the two Oklahoma-owned companies will continue to work together on "Total Coverage" in The Oklahoman and on News 9, combining efforts on news stories, to bring Oklahoma the most complete news possible. The companies will also continue to collaborate promotionally - in efforts that build and enhance Oklahoma communities.
