Rufus Alexander, Minnesota: The Vikings need help at linebacker, and Alexander was better than expected in pass coverage during minicamp.

"Obviously, the litmus for a linebacker is will he strike you and you can't really tell that because they've been admonished not to,” coach Brad Childress said.

Larry Birdine, Green Bay: The Packers have some proven defensive ends on the roster, but not a lot of depth. He will get a closer look from coaches at the next minicamp May 15.

Zach Latimer, Washington: The Redskins are trying to upgrade the defense across the board, and Latimer offers special-teams abilities as well.

Paul Thompson, New York Jets; C.J. Ah You, Buffalo: Both teams open their first minicamps Saturday.
