GUTHRIE — Coyle Schools Principal Josh Sumrall wanted to motivate his students to read 5,000 books. Instead of offering them prizes or having students throw pies in his face, he offered to ride a bull for the first time if they met their reading goal.

Sumrall, 29, kept his promise and hopped on a bull Friday in front of more than 450 students and spectators at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Guthrie. But the ride wasn't as smooth as he'd hoped.

Sumrall's battle with the bull, named 5 o'Clock Somewhere, will likely be the last time he steps into the ring with a horned animal.

Right after the bull left the chute, Sumrall fell off, and the animal kicked him and stepped on his back and ribs, leaving bruises, scrapes and cuts on his body.

"I did it once, but I don't think I'll ever do it again,” Sumrall said. "We raised a lot of money for a good cause, though.”

About $1,400 was raised at the event, and proceeds will go toward the library at Coyle Public Schools. Sumrall was not seriously injured and is resting at home. He said he expects to heal to within a few days.
