Danny Jennings showed why he is one of the best sprint car drivers in State Fair Speedway history on Friday night. He battled his way to the front of the super sprint A feature race and held off the hottest driver at the speedway,
Chris Burns, for the win.
Jennings made his way around the always quick
Larry Neighbors before passing
Jeff Leep and
Koby Barksdale for the lead on lap 13.
Burns, the defending division champion, followed
Jennings to the front.
Jennings' slick driving and an accidental bump from the No. 41 car driven by
Brent Swift kept
Burns in second place.
Jennings notched his second feature win of the season.
Barksdale finished third.
Leep held onto fourth place.
The super sprint feature got off to a rough start with three crashes in the first three laps. One of the casualties was
Gary Owens. His No. 33 sprinter lost a wheel on the front straight. The tire bounced all the way to the last fence where it nearly bounced over and into the cars parked in the southwest parking area.
The action might have hooked a few new fans. Military personnel could be seen in the stands, many of whom were first-timers due to Free Military Night in honor of Memorial Day.
In the factory stock division,
Hesston Shaw had nothing left to win with four laps to go in the feature race. The Hennessey driver was awarded the checkered flag on lap 11 by mistake. The factory feature races are scheduled for 15 laps.
Track officials got the cars lined back up after the premature finish.
Shaw went ahead and led the final laps and drove his hot pink No. 12 car to his second checkered flag of the night.
Oklahoma City's
Ray Nelson won the
USA modified main event for his second feature victory of the year.
