The rougher the better for
Steve Clemmons.
The 52 year-old trim carpenter from Piedmont navigated his way around the deep ruts in the track Friday night at State Fair Speedway en route to the factory stock feature win.
"My car likes the rough ones,”
Clemmons said. "You don't really drive any different. You just grit your teeth.”
Clemmons made his way around Justin and
Jeremy Allen on lap 12 to take the lead in the 15-lap feature race.
"I got underneath both of them,”
Clemmons said. "I don't really think they could get to the bottom of the track. My car can go anywhere.”
The win moved
Clemmons into second place in the point standings, but a huge lead by
Kevin Becker makes it unlikely he can be caught.
Clemmons said he is motivated to race nonetheless.
"I just come out here to have fun anyway,”
Clemmons said. "Second place would be the best finish of my career anyway, but I ain't there yet.”
Friday the 13th certainly provided a wild night. Numerous crashes plagued the evening, especially in the sprint car classes, but the rain-drenched track had more to do with the wrecks than the date.
Strike Hill survived a flip fest to win the super sprint feature, while
Chris Burns won the championship sprint race. Mark Brill won the pro stock feature.
