Fly fishing for trout in rapids is more like surfing

BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON, Colo. — Trying to cast a fly the size of a sparrow was challenging enough.

But to do so while precariously perched in the bow of a raft that was shooting down rapids was definitely an exercise in humility.

As my raft cascaded down the roaring river, it occurred to me that fly fishing for trout in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison was more like surfing than fishing.
