On the fifth day at sea, Ngo Quang Minh watched starvation claim the life of a 10-year-old boy.

Later that night, the boy's father, who also was captain of the rickety wooden craft, vanished.

He had thrown himself overboard so that his son would not perish alone, Minh said Saturday through a translator.

Each day, two or three of the 80-plus passengers died during the perilous voyage.
