Switzer may change name for promotion

Published: August 2, 2007
What would it take for the man with arguably the most famous name in Oklahoma sports to surrender his identity?

For Barry Switzer, it will take only 2,500 people.

The former Oklahoma football coach, as part of a promotion with Alltel Wireless, will change his name to "Barry Switcher” for a day if 2,500 cell-phone users switch to Alltel from another provider, or renew or add a line to their current contract during August.

More importantly, Alltel will donate $100 to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation for each of the 2,500 people.

"It's a fun deal,” said Switzer, who is the state spokesman for Alltel. "It's a win-win situation for everybody.

"I've been called worse things than Barry Switcher.”
