Former Oklahoma football player Carl Pendleton held the Bobby Bowden Fellowship of Christian Athletes Award in his hands for about two minutes. And that was enough for him.

Pendleton, who was announced as the winner of the award in January, finally received the trophy Thursday night during the OU Caravan stop at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

A video-taped message from Bowden played during the event. After a brief acceptance speech, Pendleton again displayed his selfless nature and handed the trophy to OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione.

"This is not my trophy,” Pendleton said. "It represents the University of Oklahoma.”

The would-be senior defensive lineman chose to quit football after his junior season with the Sooners to take care of his 11-year-old brother, Kierstan, for whom he is the legal guardian.

The president speaks: Sherri Coale is still getting used to her new title: Mrs. President.

On Wednesday, the OU coach was officially appointed president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Among the things on Coale's agenda in her two years as president is attendance at the NCAA Tournament.

"It was — to be quite candid — brutal in the early rounds,” Coale said. "We're coming up with some measures that will answer those questions and hopefully build momentum into the Final Four.

"Small things that will make a big impact, I believe.”

Big Blake: OU men's basketball coach Jeff Capel was accompanied by the smallest and biggest person at the caravan stop. He entered carrying his 3-month-old daughter, Cameron, in his arms, while incoming freshman Blake Griffin walked behind him.

While Cameron Capel has just begun growing, Griffin apparently isn't finished.

"We measured him in the middle of June, and he measured in at 6-foot-10,” Capel said of Griffin. "So we think he's grown a little bit.”
