QBs getting equal time
Kevin Wilson wants to see how his three quarterbacks react in game-type situations.

That's part of the reason Oklahoma's scrimmage on Saturday is open to the public. It's also why the Sooners offensive coordinator and his other coaches will step to the sideline during practice.

"Instead of us being out there calling the play and setting the tempo, ‘Hey, it's your team, your offense. You've got this group. Let's see how you do.'” Wilson said. "We did that a lot at the end of last spring, and we want to start early this year with those guys playing on their own, instead of us holding their hands.”

Wilson said all three quarterbacks — Joey Halzle, Sam Bradford and Keith Nichol — are playing an equal number of snaps in practice.

Though there's no timeline for any decisions, Wilson can see the need to soon trim the competition to two or even one.

"I think the sooner that can be done, potentially, the better,” he said.

Dotson's battles: Getting passed on the depth chart by sophomore Auston English isn't weighing heavily on senior Alonzo Dotson's mind.

"It's not a challenge,” Dotson said. "On this team, the best player is gonna play. I need to find it within myself to make the plays so I can be a starter.”

The fifth-year senior was slowed over the summer by what he called heat-related issues but says he's holding up well in the mid-90 degree heat during two-a-days.

"I'm getting back in the groove of things,” he said. "Right now, my health is really looking good. My body's telling me that I'm getting back healthy.”

Defensive ends coach Chris Wilson said he believes Dotson to be playing at about 95 percent.

Scrimmage info: Saturday's 11 a.m. scrimmage at Owen Field is open to fans free of charge.

Gates 1 and 7 only will open at 9:30 a.m., and seating will be available in the lower sections on the east and west sides. There will be no access to the west concourse, south end zone or upper decks.

In addition to normally prohibited items on game days, cameras are not allowed during the scrimmage.

The Switzer Center will be closed as the facility undergoes construction.

Rally time: OU has set the date for its annual preseason pep rally. The Big Red Rally will take place at 6 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Owen Field.
