Expect Stoops to be cautious with his QB

NORMAN — Let’s play what-if.

What if Rhett Bomar, and not dynamo DeMarco Murray, wore the No. 7 jersey for the Oklahoma offense?

Looking back wistfully at Young Master Rhett’s fall from grace does you no good. But lest you wear shoulder pads or blow a whistle on the Sooner practice fields, it does you no harm either.

So let’s do it. Can you imagine how loaded this Bob Stoops battalion would be if quarterbacked by Bomar?

The Sooners staged their second and final dress rehearsal Saturday night in the rain at Owen Field, and the three quarterbacks showed us about what they’ve been showing since spring, even if the coaches are mum.

1. Sam Bradford likely to start, with Kid Nichol likely to play and Joey Halzle a distant third.

2. None of the trio is close to what Bomar would have been in his third year as the Sooner starter. Heck, none of the trio likely will approach Bomar’s talents as a redshirt freshman starter in 2005.

Not his talents. But they will surpass his results. As Bob Stoops said a year ago when Paul Thompson took over for the defrocked Bomar, OU probably can replace a guy who threw 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. But that was a green offense, with all kinds of freshmen playing, and a system built more for Jason White than a young gun with fresh legs. Bomar in 2006 would have been better than Thompson in 2006, and Tall Paul is proving that he was no slouch as a QB, currently making the Green Bay football Packers think about keeping him around.

Bomar by 2007 would have been a stud, and with this line and these receivers and Allen Patrick and Murray, it’s easy to see the Sooners ranked numero uno instead of the eighth they’ve been slotted by The Associated Press. But enough of milk spills.

That was then and this is wow, except at quarterback. “I think we’re pretty close to knowing what we’re going to get with everybody else,” Stoops said Saturday night. “But you still have to get it.”

And what will he get at quarterback, be it Bradford or even eventually Nichol? Not Bomar talent. But better productivity? Are these quarterbacks close to where Bomar was as a redshirt freshman or even where Jason White was as a third-year sophomore in ’01 who really hadn’t played?

“I like what they’re doing,” Stoops said. “It’s hard to look back, but I don’t feel they’re much different than those guys.”

The Bradford clues come in threes:

1. Bradford again started the scrimmage and this time he worked more with the No. 1 offense, although all three QBs had multiple turns at such luxury.

2. Bradford’s statistics shined: 12 of 17 passing for 130 yards and four touchdowns, although two of the TDs came in red-zone situations in which the offense was set up close. Bradford’s actual performance didn’t match those stats — his receivers made a couple of nice comeback routes — but Nichol and Halzle combined to complete 13 of 39. Any coach will take 12 of 17 in the rain.

3. OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said “Sam played rock-solid. He’s been steady.”

Later, Wilson used described Bradford as “cautious” and said he wanted a little more zest. Wilson also said Nichol “lives a little more on the edge.”

Let me promise you. With this defense, and with this offensive line able to generate running lanes for Murray and Patrick, Stoops will pick cautious at quarterback every single time.

Stoops went with an edgy quarterback in 2005 in large part because that offense needed spice. Not so much now.

The "kid" refrerence is to former major league pitching great "Kid" Nichols. I like it. Sports is about history. OU football is nostalgic, too. I wish OU, with all its speed, would use the 1950's "go-go" offense and even sprinkle in some single wing. We need good nick-names to return to sports. IF Bradford is a really good player we could dub him " slingig Sammy" out of respect for West Texas legend Sammy Baugh. With the likes of Vick and Bomar the sport could use a few more "slingin' Sams."

I agree, we are better off without Bomar. Talented yes, but cocky and not a very good leader. We need a down to earth leader that makes good decisions... and talented. You can't say these guys aren't in the same league as Bomar, we haven't really had a chance to see them in a game! There is nothing wrong with being deep in the QB area, we must not forget about injuries. At least we can be prepared in case one goes down. The "kid" thing does need to stop. Yes he is a freshman but we are already aware of this. He isn't the first or the only freshman to see playing time. Maybe he doesn't want to be the cute kid and be feared on the field. Use his name.

Wah, wah, wah. You boys would be drooling over Bomar had he not screwed up. Grow up.
Vickie, Norman - Aug 19, 2007 at 10:29 pm
Let's move on...I would venture to say that in 8 weeks we will be saying "Bomar Who"? Stoops and his war party always produce and the likes of Sam Bradford and Company will make us all wonder in amazement. Sounds good doesn't it, well it might just come to pass!!

Tramel, you're an idiot. Enough said.

"football IS life" The Team is better off without him. Gutsy, yes. Thought he was better than he was, yes. "team first" player, NO
Personally, I would have liked to see the NCAA keep him from playing Division II.

Good ridence.

The young men that are vying for QB now are ones with character. That's what we need.
william, destin - Aug 19, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Get over it, Berry. Bomar is gone! He screwed OU and the team for the sake of a few measly thousand dollars. It showed his immature lack of character, not leadershiip qualities! It is long past time for you to move on. This OU team will be better off without him. Give them a chance. The "kids" on the current team havecharacter. They're not a bunch of self-centered brats.
J. Brent, Colorado Springs - Aug 19, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Berry, you are right on. First, many OU "fans" have dissed Bomar because he made a stupid and immature mistake for which he paid a much higher price. But his talent and ability would have made us an offensive force this year, to be sure. I love Paul Thompson and though he did a great job last year. But Bomar had more skills.

But to this year, it will be interesting. My former boss had a daughter that went to school with Bradford and he went to all there games. He told me Bradford would be a great QB and was not highly recruited because there was only one school he wanted to go to and that was OU. No recruiting games with Bradford. When he got an offer from Stoops, that was it. I also think Nichols can be special, it will be an interesting battle between these QB's in the next few years.

Come on Tramel, drop the Kid Nichol stuff, you are not being cute, just proves you are a true redneck.
Blair, Oklahoma City - Aug 19, 2007 at 1:23 pm
I agree with dropping all the Kid Nichol references. You make it sound like he's the first true freshman to ever play at OU.
Robert, Oklahoma City - Aug 19, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Levie hit the nail on the head, Mr. Tramel. QB's have to be respected leaders and they have to be accountable for their actions. Bomar was neither. You can't just plug Bomar into what you see from the OU offense now. The OU offense is what it is because of who ran it last year and who runs it this year. I honestly would expect to see a much lower level of performance from the offense, the off. line especially, if Bomar ran the show.

Like many past seasons, qb position usually give much hypes.

Let the real season games do the talking.

I don't believe Bomar would not have been the quarterback that you think. He had a good arm, but others do too. Quarterback is80 percent mental and the kid just didn't make good decisions....on or off the field. He was flashy, cocky but not a leader. He was resented by a lot of his team mates. We are better off withou him.
Levie, Oklahoma City - Aug 19, 2007 at 9:09 am
i agree with that thought, instead of trying to be so cute barry, why dont you write a decent article!

I second that. "Kid" Nichol. Wow Barry, you are so original! Not near as creative and cute as you think you are.
