PAULS VALLEY — Sprint car driver Gary Owens made it back to the race track last week after a long, painful recovery.

Owens missed two weeks of racing after a serious crash at State Fair Speedway. He suffered a concussion and bruised lungs.

"It was good to get back out there,” Owens said. "I had to kind of watch my P's and Q's.”

Owens said the hard flip between turns 3 and 4 didn't leave him apprehensive to race.

"I have learned that if you let yourself get nervous and worry, that is when you really mess up,” Owens said.

Owens certainly doesn't need any more miscues. The 22-year-old driver has gone through both engines and both chassis' on his American Sprint Car Series and super sprint cars. Neither of the wrecks was Owens' fault, but only his champ sprint car remains in good condition.

"It just seems like anything that can go wrong has gone wrong this year,” said Owens.

Owens managed to win his heat and finished fifth in the A feature last week.

"I considered that a good night,” Owens said. "At least we could get the car back on the trailer at the end of the night.”
