Oklahoma City police are seeking help today in identifying a boy left in a Wal-Mart store by a suspected shoplifter.

The boy, who appears to be 2 or 3 years old, has been in Department of Human Services custody since Friday, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said in a news release. The boy is unable to fully identify himself, and no one has reported him missing or come forward to claim him.

About 1:20 p.m. Friday, security personnel at the store at 6100 W Reno Ave. approached a man they suspected of shoplifting, the release says. When they confronted the man, he ran, leaving the boy behind in a shopping cart.

The boy was wearing a button-down, short-sleeved shirt and shorts. He is 2 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 35 pounds.

The boy was examined by a pediatrician and appeared to have no medical problems, DHS spokeswoman Mary Leaver said.

"He has given us the name of either Brian or Ryan,” Leaver said. "Since he's so young, it's hard to tell.”

DHS cannot normally comment on specific cases, but Leaver said DHS officials decided to comment publicly because it could aid them in determining the boy's identity.

"He looks like he's doing very well despite what happened to him,” Leaver said. "We're really hoping that someone is able to recognize him and give us the information we need to get him back to his family.”

The suspected shoplifter — described as a bald black man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, wearing a blue shirt, dark blue jeans, white shoes and a large necklace or chain — has not been captured or identified.

Wal-Mart security video shows the man calmly pushing the boy through the store in a shopping cart and entering the lawn and garden section, where he exited the store and was accosted by security personnel.
