This campy classic with the catchy Queen sound track has been out of print for years. Now fans can see hunky Sam Jones play pro quarterback Flash Gordon, drawn into conflict with the evil Emperor Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) in this often-cheesy update of Alex Raymond's 1930s comic strip.

When energy waves from the planet Mongo pull the moon from orbit, Flash and Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) become unwilling passengers on a rocketship piloted by Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol), who is heading for the planet Mongo to face Ming. Flash must unite the warring factions of Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton) and Prince Vultan (Brian Blessed) to overthrow Ming and rescue Dale. Meanwhile, Flash must avoid the affections of Ming's daughter (Ornella Muti), who brings a strange sexuality to the proceedings.

The film is remastered with anamorphic widescreen.

Buyers of this long out-of-print DVD may complain that it has fewer special features than the European release for the film's 25th anniversary.

Extras: Featurette interviewing Ross about his love for the film, interview with screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr.
