If there's one room in the house that's never big enough, it has to be the kitchen. Wouldn't it be great if there were a simple way to "cook up” extra space without an expensive (and messy) remodel? For do-it-yourselfers, this kitchen island project is an easy, attractive and inexpensive way to add valuable storage and work space.

The island features a handsome and durable maple butcher block top and casters for convenience. Best of all, it adds eight square feet of counter space, two generous drawers and two big storage shelves (one with an optional wine rack) to the kitchen.

Using all straight cuts and simple construction techniques, the project is easy enough for beginners. Just cut out the pieces, laminate the top and assemble using screws, glue and nails. Once the project is put together, install the casters and drawers then oil the top.

The island measures about 48 inches long by 24 inches wide by 36 inches tall.

The Kitchen Island plan, No. 932, is $10.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, shopping list, cutting schedule and a toll-free phone number to call with project questions. A package of kitchen furniture projects, No. C155, is $22.95 and includes this project plus plans for a stationary chopping block and a set of storage bins for produce and dry goods. Include $4 for postage and handling. Allow about two weeks for delivery.
