The annual Walk of Hope will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Oklahoma Bar Association, 1901 Lincoln Blvd., and will travel around the state Capitol. The walk is sponsored by HOPE, a support group for women with gynecologic cancers.
Lt. Gov. Jari Askins will speak, along with several medical specialists, and Lori Rasmussen of OETA will serve as the host. Refreshments, entertainment and an educational program will follow at the Bar Association.
About 78,000 new cases of gynecologic cancer will be diagnosed this year, according to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation. Of those cases, about 28,000 will end in death.
"Pap tests, although critical to detecting pre-cancerous lesions in the cervix, do not detect ovarian cancer, so women should also have annual pelvic exams,” said Dr. Gary Johnson, OU Physicians gynecologic oncologist. "The early warning signs for ovarian tumors are very subtle and they can frequently be misdiagnosed or attributed to other problems.”
