STILLWATEROklahoma State University football coach Mike Gundy expressed two regrets about his Saturday postgame comments.

He wishes he had said more and wishes he had been better prepared.

"I probably should have had a better prepared speech — my English would have been better,” Gundy said Monday at his weekly news conference at Boone Pickens Stadium. "The only thing I said is that I should have written it out because there's other things I wanted to say and didn't get out because I forgot.”

Gundy made national news Saturday when he spent his entire postgame news conference on an emotional defense of backup quarterback Bobby Reid and criticism of a column by The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson.

The column asserted Reid remains OSU's most talented quarterback but lost the starting job in part because of his attitude and lack of toughness.

Following OSU's 49-45 victory over Texas Tech Saturday, Gundy berated Carlson, saying three-fourths of the column was "inaccurate, fiction.”

Reid quarterbacked OSU to a bowl victory over Alabama last season and has been called the biggest recruit in school history. But the junior from Houston lost the starting job to sophomore Zac Robinson two weeks ago.

Gundy called Reid a good kid who does things right and is undeserving of such criticism.

"It's garbage,” Gundy said Saturday of the column, "and the editor who let it come out is garbage.”

Gundy said he has received considerable support from other coaches in the form of e-mail and voice mail messages. E-mails to The Oklahoman have been overwhelmingly supportive of Gundy. OSU athletic director Mike Holder praised his coach for defending a player, adding that "nothing is more important to us than our student-athletes.”

At his Monday news conference, Gundy spoke for 10 minutes before the questions turned to Saturday's postgame speech.

Three times, Gundy declined requests to be specific with what he believed was inaccurate in the story. When asked by Carlson, he said, "I don't have to. I'd rather just let it go.”

Gundy had originally planned to not address his postgame reaction, saying there should have been a handout to the media addressing that point. But he did answer questions.

"The only thing that matters to me is what I thought was right, and whatever I thought was right is what I said. Other than that, I just have to let it go,” Gundy said. "I don't say things for people to disagree or agree with me. I say them if I think they're right.”

Gundy's Saturday comments became popular on the Internet, hitting the top 10 videos on YouTube by midday Monday.

"It just happened because of my feelings for the team and the players, and I just felt like it wasn't the right thing,” he said. "I certainly didn't do it to receive recognition, and I certainly don't want to take away from this upcoming game like it unfortunately took away from the last game for the team.”

Gundy said Monday he wasn't mad at Carlson. He said his objection was with the story.

"I'm not against anybody,” he said. "I don't dislike Jenni. I mean Jenni and I have had a good relationship. Her and I joke about things. Obviously I didn't feel real comfortable with that article but I'm not mad at her and I don't dislike her. I don't think she's a bad person. Not that I'm somebody to judge. That's something maybe her and I can talk about.”

Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder said Gundy was merely defending a member of his program.

"Mike Gundy's actions were in support of one of his players. At Oklahoma State, nothing is more important to us than our student-athletes. They are the reason we are here,” Holder said.

"Coach Gundy was defending a member of his team. They are family to him. If we don't stand up for our student-athletes, why are we here?”

Earlier in the day, during the Big 12 coaches teleconference, Gundy was a bit more strident.

"Wish I would have said more,” he said. "Tired of certain people downgrading college athletes who are good people. If you want to comment on his play, comment on his play.

"But don't comment on something that's outside of his play that is downgrading or belittling to a young man who is trying to do things right and he has to get splashed all over the newspaper in the state of Oklahoma. And on a game day.”

Most of the 10-minute question-and-answer session with Gundy focused on his postgame news conference, not his team or upcoming games or Saturday's wild win over Texas Tech. Questions came both regionally and nationally, with the back-and-forth often strained.

ESPN's Joe Schad asked Gundy to expand on his stance that college athletes should be spared criticism.

"Did you see the press conference?” Gundy said, before Schad repeated his question. "I'm asking if you saw the press conference.”

Schad: "Yes.”

Gundy: "That pretty much answered that question, didn't it?”

Asked if his postgame comments, which included no talk of the game, might have overshadowed what his players accomplished in such an important win, Gundy stood by his actions.

"I hate that for the players,” he said, "but it's more important that a young man having a difficult time, going through a change where he's been moved to second team and another player's been moved to first team, and then for a person to take a cheap shot at him and belittle him in the public eye. … I thought it was more important that somebody take up for the player who couldn't stand up for himself.”

Gundy said he's received considerable support from other coaches in the form of phone calls and e-mails.

"I've been bombed with them,” Gundy said. "I don't read them, because I don't read e-mail and all that. I just know the secretaries keep coming in and saying the phone won't stop ringing, the e-mails are coming from the support.

"That's not why I did it. I didn't know it was going to have this kind of effect. I did it because I thought it was the right thing to do, because of the way it was handled with one of our players.”

I am starting to get the distinct feeling that you don't like Doug and I. Here Doug sends his best wishes and says delete again and again and again and again and again. Has anyone let you know that 95% of the America public who has weighed in on this issue. Says that you all were wrong. WHERE OH WHERE DID DOUGLAS FROM MERIDIANS POSTS GO OH HERE IS ONE. WE ARE VERY CLOSE FRIENDS. THE INTERNET IS SO WONDERFUL AS THIS WAS JUST E-MAILED A FEW MINUTES AGO. HAVE A GOOD DAY. NEWSOK where oh where are my previous posts. Don't worry I saved them for you. QUIT ERASING THEM AND ACCEPT YOUR FATE!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU AGREE READERS MIGHT I SUGGEST YOU DO THE SAME. Sorry for the inconvenience some of you are receiving this a second time. I mean who knew that yahoo would only let you send an e-mail to a limited number of people. To whom it may concern at NEWSOK.com, The Oklahoman, OPUBCO, NEWS 9: First, it saddens me as an Oklahoman that these news organizations listed above have taken the low road over these past few days concerning the Mike Gundy post game press conference. Admittedly I am very upset and have even at times almost sunk(not really that close) as low as your News Organizations have these past few days in vain hoping that the public sentiment would finally be heard. It has become painfully obvious that none of you care that Jenni Carlson personally attacked a young man (kid as Gundy referred to him). Mike Gundy, Jenni Carlson, and yes even Bobby Reid are not above scrutiny just as all of us are not above scrutiny. However, that being said what was done by Jenni Carlson and the OPUBCO family was a very personal and malicious attack against this young man. I have been critical of Bobby Reid’s and Mike Gundy’s performance in the past but I never and would never attack them personally to make myself feel better. There is a difference between criticizing a person’s performance and attacking them personally. The line was obviously crossed in this instance and this story, column, article; whatever you want to call it should have never been printed in the Oklahoman or posted on NEWSOK.com. It is trash that has caused an irreversible chain of events that has caused lots of damage to a lot of organizations and people. When simply if it had been edited properly and well thought out the subsequent and ongoing chain of events would not have ever happened. To name a few ESPN, FOX, MSN, CNN, Yahoo, You tube and many other media sources. Of course most of the reporters and news agencies have taken up sides with the OPUBCO family and supporters. No real shock there. However, none of you are listening to the majority of the American people who have clearly stated that what Jenni Carlson and the Oklahoman did was wrong and without their wrong the ensuring events would not have happened. Ed Kelley decided to take a very cheap shot at the people of this Great Nation, the Great State of Oklahoma and those of us who genuinely care about Oklahoma State University in saying that we have misplaced priorities and should be focusing our attention more on the education and Presidential status at Oklahoma State University . While I appreciate his report (somewhat) it was very distasteful distributing it at this time to try and take heat off of Jenni Carlson and the OPUBCO family for a very obvious mistake that they made. I have trust in Oklahoma State University and the people within it and outside of it within the State Government of Oklahoma to do their jobs to make sure that not only Oklahoma State University officials are doing their jobs but also for the University of Oklahoma and any other publicly funded schools, colleges, and University officials are also doing their jobs. If they are not then no doubt those of you within the media circle will be right there to make sure they do. I am sorry I may have missed it in his report but was the State of Oklahoma demanding that OSU find a new president and they have ignored those requests repeatedly? I didn’t think so. This was an obvious attempt by him and the OPUBCO family and supporters such as NEWS 9 and Griffin communications to somehow turn this football story into something so much more. SHAME ON YOU. I can assure you that my priorities are not misplaced as I set here in the middle of war in Iraq , serving as part of the greatest Nation and Navy in the World. It is people like me and the ones that I serve along side in all branches of the military that day after day put our lives on the line all around the world and we continue day in and day out to ensure that you, your families, friends, enemies and the organizations you serve can continue to have the rights that allow such mockery of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States of America. I am sure that our fore Fathers are not very proud of this display of unprofessional journalism. All who serve in the military are people just like you and we enjoy the same things as the next person. College Football, NFL, Golf, NASCAR, fishing, hunting, cards, polo, swimming, running, biking and so on. What I don’t enjoy is reading or watching such a debacle that has ensured from a post game press conference by Mike Gundy. Lastly, I am deeply concerned about how this out of control situation will continue to affect the Great the State of Oklahoma and the people who are a part of it. Although I no longer live and work there I continue to care and always will about the people, the communities, the farms, the businesses, the churches, the schools, the colleges, the Universities and so on. Because I am and always will be an Oklahoman no matter where I live and work. Yes, I am an Oklahoma State fan but this issue goes way deeper than allegiance to school lines and all of us would do well to remember that. Shortly I will make my last visit to the NEWSOK.com website and can assure you I will avoid your news organizations like the plague. Tulsa World, KOCO, KFOR, KC STAR I am a new customer. P.S. Cox Communications, Alan Gordon Jewelers, Bob Howard Auto Group, Reynolds Ford, Cosmetic Surgery Centers your companies have been included in this e-mail as your companies all advertise with NEWSOK.com. P.S. I'll bet David is a novelist or a trial lawyer because he seems quite adept at creating stories out of whole cloth.

My final say regarding Carlson is her rationalization of her column drips with body language indicating a lot of false or misleading statements. If you are going to attack someone personally. you need to use credible and quotable sources. Otherwise, it's just gossip and should be moved to the gossip pages.

I am very much inclined to support coach Gundy. I think as a reporter Ms Carlson was not reporting news she was editorializing. She decided what was fact and declared it to be so. I really don't know all that went on but my gut feeling is in support of Gundy and not the daily Oklhahoman. I do not understand why a so called reporter would want to be the decision maker for any team which is what it seemed to me.

dmdiva, Escondido - Sep 27, 2007 at 12:01 am
David/KS: Ok...now I'm convinced you're a journalist or in the media somehow. 1) He did not attack her "womanhood". Nowhere in his "attack" did he reference her as a woman. He said "person". He also asked if she had kids. He wanted to know if she was a parent, because a parent would understand not to write something like she did, or at the very least put it in a different context. 2)To require a football coach to keep his emotions in check at all times is beyond unreasonable. Their line of work is ROOTED in emotion. Every once in a while they jump on people when they say stupid things. For Jenni to talk about how suprised she was for as long as she has covered football is intellectually vacant. 3)No, OSU does not have the tradition of the Gooners, but he's competitive and is going to do whatever he thinks is right to win. All coaches are secretive, ESPECIALLY with the media. And how in the hell did you know he was not getting his team ready? Were you in the locker room? Were you there watching game tape with them? You don't even like OSU...Why do you even give a D*MN?That's beyond silly. 5)Where is it written that Gundy HAS to talk to Jenni about his team? He has the absolute right to say "no comment" or whatever he wants. She does NOT have the right to publish innaccuracies that tarnish or damage another's reputation. That's called LIBEL (Or DEFAMATION). Nor is it an either/or situation. It's neither/nor: NEITHER is her info accurate, NOR is he afraid to face whatever truth you're trying to conjure up.
6)When did he ever say he wanted to "build goodwill"? 7)You should be careful spouting about what you think you know. I was leary about Miles when he 1st came, and I'm not completely sold on him yet. I do know that he's hired pretty well, and that he beat your Gooners two years in a row with inferior talent. As far as LSU, we end up finding out more than we want to sometimes. But I'm not an LSU Homer who lives and dies by what the sports writers here write about them. I've met Coach Miles a number of times, but I can't speak for what he would do if this happened to him. I would hope he would do something similar, but I don't think he's wired that way. We have a few sports personalities that need it, but most of them have way more class than to do what Jenni did.

Two of Gundy's quotes in an article yesterday caught my attention: "Her and I joke about things." and "That's something maybe her and I can talk about." OK, putting aside his moronic tirade, where did Coach Gundy learn his grammer? He doesn't do the State of Oklahoma or OSU any favors by being in the national spotlight.
Deanna, Oklahoma City - Sep 26, 2007 at 10:58 am
Go Gundy! Put that amateur in her place!
Mitch, Oklahoma City - Sep 26, 2007 at 9:57 am
Jeff, I am NOT an ERA man, but for Gundy to act like a spoiled brat and attack Carlson's womanhood for not having kids is sickening. Gundy PERSONALLY attacked Ms. Carlson, and that's crossing the line. Had he said it was a bad column, that's one thing. But to act like he did after a big win over a Big 12 South rival and not even say one word about what a great win it was despite getting shredded by Graham Harrell shows Gundy is not focused on getting the Cowboys ready to play on Saturday. Since that's the case, he needs to find another line of work. OSU is the second best football team in the state (sometimes third behind Tulsa), yet Gundy thinks he needs to act more secretive than the KGB. If he wants to build goodwill, he certainly is going the wrong way about it. Ms. Carlson repeatedly has asked Gundy to tell her what is factually inaccurate about her story. Gundy has refused to say anything. Either Ms. Carlson's statements are accurate, or Gundy simply doesn't want to face the truth. Jeff, I know you think Les Miles is the second coming, but wouldn't you like to know more about what's going on with the Bayou Bengals? And if he went on a rant against a Louisiana writer, would you feel the same way, even if what the writer reported was true? I know of no female writers who cover LSU, so this will never be an issue. Believe me, Ms. Carlson has thick skin, or she wouldn't have lasted at the Oklahoman as long as she has. She can take criticism. What she shouldn't have to be subjected to is a childish football coach who doesn't know how to act at a post-game press conference.
David, Russell, KS - Sep 26, 2007 at 1:42 am
David: you must be a member of the media in some form or fasion, because what you posted here and on the other board sounds like something Dennis Dodd of CBS might write. I'm sure you are a big ERA man, which is great, but if a woman wants to be a sports reporter and cover FOOTBALL, she better learn to take a little dressing down when she picks on a team member. Gundy was just making sure she was getting the most out of her equal rights. And I'm sure you though Bill Snyder, Mark Mangino, or Bob Stoops were 2nd coming too.
