Two days ago, Mike Gundy launched a verbal tirade on yours truly. The Oklahoma State football coach took offense to my Saturday column about Bobby Reid. When Gundy was still talking sense, before he went completely ballistic, he contended that the column was fiction.
"Three-fourths of this is inaccurate,” he said.
Then about three minutes later, Gundy stormed out. No questions. No rebuttals.
Monday at Oklahoma State's weekly news conference, I had a chance to ask the question that's been eating at me ever since:
You contended three-fourths of that column was inaccurate; could you tell me what those factual errors were?
"I don't have to,” he said.
Our paper has a policy of correcting errors, and I can't do that if I don't know what the errors were.
"I don't have to,” Gundy said again. "I'd rather just let it go.”
I'd rather let it go, too, but by disputing the facts in my column, Gundy attacked my credibility.
These were not wild accusations. They are facts that came from sources and observations. I will not stand on the sidelines and allow someone to attack my credibility.
Anyone who's involved with producing a product, any product, can understand.
Let's say you're making and selling widgets, and the widget maker across the street goes out on the corner and tells everyone passing by that your widgets are faulty. Seventy-five percent of them don't work, he says. You know it's not true.
What would you do?
Take it?
Of course not. You'd want your next-door widget maker to substantiate those claims or back off of them.
That's what I wanted.
Gundy was asked on at least three separate occasions Monday — once by me and two other times by other journalists — to expand on his contention that the facts in the column were inaccurate. Did Reid never consider transferring, for example? Did he play through injuries like coaches wanted? Gundy has yet to argue any facts specifically.
Gundy has only attempted to dispute one thing in the column. Saturday night, he said Cowboy coaches didn't start Reid over Donovan Woods in 2005 because Reid threatened to transfer.
I never said that they did.
Here's what I said: "Reid has considered transferring a couple different times, the first as early as 2005. Reid, then a redshirt freshman, was facing competition from returner Donovan Woods, and apparently, Reid considered leaving OSU just because he had to compete for the spot.”
I feel as adamant about the facts in that column as Gundy did in his belief that his player shouldn't have been so scrutinized.
That is a reasonable and healthy debate. How much should college athletes be scrutinized?
High school athletes are treated differently from college athletes. Pro athletes are treated differently still. In general, athletes are more scrutinized the higher they climb.
There are shades of gray, though, in college athletics. A fourth- or fifth-year player is held more accountable for on-field performance than a freshman. A college football player at a big-time school is scrutinized more, too, because football is just a different beast.
The idea of "amateurs” playing big-time college football is novel but naive these days. College football is the minor leagues for pro football. It isn't quite professional, but it isn't still amateur, either. The money and the attention and the importance shade it more toward the professional level.
Reid, as a fourth-year player and a 21-year-old man, leans more toward the upper end of that scale.
Now, I didn't write that column Saturday to embarrass Bobby Reid. He has been a super kid to deal with, and frankly, I've thought highly of his ability. Heck, I wrote last year that I thought he might be the second coming of Vince Young.
No, the reason for my column Saturday was because of one lingering question — why have the Cowboys, who so adamantly backed Reid, suddenly switched course, benched the biggest recruit to ever sign with the program and jumped full speed ahead with Zac Robinson?
Again, my answer came from sources and observations.
I stand by those facts.
Gundy has said three-fourths of them are wrong, but I'm waiting to hear the argument against even one.

Instead of standing by her article, I think Jenni needs to apologize or be let go. The majority of the newspaper's customer base has lost confidence in her judgement and motives.

Jenni Carlson needs to stop mixing opinion with fact. If indeed Bobby Reid was benched for an attitude problem then definite, defined and named sources should have been named in the article. Since sghe has not been able to name her sources then this article looks like a book of fiction. In my job it is all about facts not suppositions. If this reporter is allowed to publish opinion as fact then the whole newspaper profession is at fault. Not only do newspapers need to clean up their act in the sports page but start reporting news as it happens regardless of opinion but only on fact. I can only hope that the editors will finally start holding their reporters responsible for reporting only the facts not their opinions unless it is stated as their personel opinion and that opinion of the newspaper or media that print s these articles or airs them on television. For too long we the public have allowed the news media to only present us with what news they feel we are capable of understanding. The news media should answer to the people they serve not the other way around. Because you write articles for the newspaper does not mean you do not have an obligation to report the truth not unsubstantuated rumor without certified sources that can be named. Maybe should rename THE DAILY OKLAHOMAN to a more apppropriate name like THE DAILY ENQUIRER FICTION RAG, ONLY THE BEST RUMORS THAT ARE NOT BASED ON FACT. For 45 years I have depended on your paper for news. Now I discover you print opinion as fact. If Jenni Carlson has any credible sources for her opinion then they need to be named, if not then their should be a public apology made to not only Bobby Reid but to the State of Oklahoma and to Oklahoma State University and to Coach Mike Gundy. Until I see a public apology or printing of definite sources I will no longer use your opinion paper as any believable source of information. I am only one person but that does not change the fact that your papers credibility is at zero. How can I believe anything you publish when it is not based on fact. Is this just in sports or is it applied throughout your socalled state leading newspaper. How can we as Oklahomans continue to believe what is written in your pages when you print unsubstantuated opinon as fact as in this article by your reporter Jenni Carlson as fact. I hope the Tulsa World has better reporting because that is where I will get my news from now on.

Sorry, you're a joke and should consider a new profession. Clearly you cannot master this one and can only damage others with your tainted and unqualified opinions. Oh, apologize before you resign.

Gundy stated two of your "facts" were false: 1. coaches say Reid plays scared. 2. Coaches put Woods at defense because Reid threatned to transer.
Why did not not address these two false statements ? Instead you hide behind some BS line "coach Gundy, tell me where my story is in error". He told you. You have ignored him and have tried to shift the focus.
NO ONE has respect for you.

If Jenni really wanted to know the answer to that question, she would have asked Coach Gundy the question when cameras weren't rolling. She wanted it on the record that she asked the question, but at a press conference isn't a time convenient for going over a list of inaccuracies. What did she expect him to do: read her column word-for-word and stop for rebuttal as the other journalists sat on their thumbs? If she really wants answers, she'll ask Coach Gundy for some time one on one.
Of course, he did give her a couple of specific matters that he took exception with (i.e. Reid threatening to transfer), but she still says she's "waitin got hear the argument against even one." What is the point if she doesn't listen?
A couple of comments. First - did Ms. Carlson's original column cross the line of what was appropriate? Possibly. Maybe even probably. But did that justify Coach Gundy's reaction? Absolutely not!!! I don't take issue with his being offended and going to bat for his player, but the way he did it was so far overboard it was ridiculous. He embarassed me to be from Oklahoma. And people can say all they want about the large majority who appear to support his actions. Before 1492 most Europeans thought the world was flat, and before 2003 most Americans believed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Just because most people believe something doesn't necessarily make them right.
Second - Whatever happened to civility in public discourse? Is the way Coach Gundy berated Ms. Carlson in public the way civilized people talk to each other these days? When I was being raised, gentlemen didn't talk to ladies that way. Some have suggested that Ms. Carlson is no lady, but Coach Gundy proved that he is no gentleman. Where I grew up, anybody who spoke to a woman that way would quickly get their tails kicked by her father/brothers/husband. And deservedly so. But perhaps Coach Gundy knew that Ms. Carlson didn't have somebody around to defend her. He said to come after him because he's a man, but it takes a real big man to scream at a defenseless woman that way. He showed himself to be a bully and a coward who deserves to have his backside kicked by every Oklahoman who still values decency. Finally - I am shocked at the viciousness of the comments directed toward Ms. Carlson by writers on this website. She may have been out of line (but who among us has never made a mistake), and Gundy was even more out of line, but many of these writers have obliterated that line. I've never particularly been an OSU fan, but as a college football fan from Oklahoma I've always supported them as another team from our state and from the Big 12 Conference (at least when they weren't playing OU!), but if the opinions expressed here are representative of the typical OSU fan, I doubt if I can ever root for them again. Biggest bunch of rednecked yahoos I've ever seen in my life. I can open hope they're the exception and not the norm.
Coach Gundy should be fired. Conduct unprofessional for a college football coach. He should have handled himself with professionalism and ignored this garbage article. By reacting to it the way he did, only gave it credibility. I was embarrassed for OSU when I watched his tirade on ESPN. The content of the article is irrelevant. OSU needs to ask the question, “How do we expect our coaches to behave in public?” I can only assume that they would want them to behave in a way that the athletes could look up to and respect. I feel bad for the team. Gundy did more damage than good and drew attention to something that doesn’t deserve a response. I would look for a new coach, one that can understand how to be professional and act in a way that exemplifies dignity and class.

If they are not then no doubt those of you within the media circle will be right there to make sure they do. I am sorry I may have missed it in his report but was the State of Oklahoma demanding that OSU find a new president and they have ignored those requests repeatedly? I didn’t think so. This was an obvious attempt by him and the OPUBCO family and supporters such as NEWS 9 and Griffin communications to somehow turn this football story into something so much more. SHAME ON YOU. I can assure you that my priorities are not misplaced as I set here in the middle of war in Iraq , serving as part of the greatest Nation and Navy in the World. It is people like me and the ones that I serve along side in all branches of the military that day after day put our lives on the line all around the world and we continue day in and day out to ensure that you, your families, friends, enemies and the organizations you serve can continue to have the rights that allow such mockery of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States of America. I am sure that our fore Fathers are not very proud of this display of unprofessional journalism. All who serve in the military are people just like you and we enjoy the same things as the next person. College Football, NFL, Golf, NASCAR, fishing, hunting, cards, polo, swimming, running, biking and so on. What I don’t enjoy is reading or watching such a debacle that has ensured from a post game press conference by Mike Gundy. Lastly, I am deeply concerned about how this out of control situation will continue to affect the Great the State of Oklahoma and the people who are a part of it. Although I no longer live and work there I continue to care and always will about the people, the communities, the farms, the businesses, the churches, the schools, the colleges, the Universities and so on. Here Doug sends his best wishes and says delete again and again and again and again and again. Has anyone let you know that 95% of the America public who has weighed in on this issue. Says that you all were wrong. WHERE OH WHERE DID DOUGLAS FROM MERIDIANS POSTS GO OH HERE IS ONE. WE ARE VERY CLOSE FRIENDS. THE INTERNET IS SO WONDERFUL AS THIS WAS JUST E-MAILED A FEW MINUTES AGO. HAVE A GOOD DAY. NEWSOK where oh where are my previous posts. Don't worry I saved them for you. QUIT ERASING THEM AND ACCEPT YOUR FATE!!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU AGREE READERS MIGHT I SUGGEST YOU DO THE SAME. Sorry for the inconvenience some of you are receiving this a second time. I mean who knew that yahoo would only let you send an e-mail to a limited number of people. To whom it may concern at NEWSOK.com, The Oklahoman, OPUBCO, NEWS 9: First, it saddens me as an Oklahoman that these news organizations listed above have taken the low road over these past few days concerning the Mike Gundy post game press conference. Admittedly I am very upset and have even at times almost sunk(not really that close) as low as your News Organizations have these past few days in vain hoping that the public sentiment would finally be heard. It has become painfully obvious that none of you care that Jenni Carlson personally attacked a young man (kid as Gundy referred to him). Mike Gundy, Jenni Carlson, and yes even Bobby Reid are not above scrutiny just as all of us are not above scrutiny. However, that being said what was done by Jenni Carlson and the OPUBCO family was a very personal and malicious attack against this young man. I have been critical of Bobby Reid’s and Mike Gundy’s performance in the past but I never and would never attack them personally to make myself feel better. There is a difference between criticizing a person’s performance and attacking them personally. The line was obviously crossed in this instance and this story, column, article; whatever you want to call it should have never been printed in the Oklahoman or posted on NEWSOK.com. It is trash that has caused an irreversible chain of events that has caused lots of damage to a lot of organizations and people. When simply if it had been edited properly and well thought out the subsequent and ongoing chain of events would not have ever happened. To name a few ESPN, FOX, MSN, CNN, Yahoo, You tube and many other media sources. Of course most of the reporters and news agencies have taken up sides with the OPUBCO family and supporters. No real shock there. However, none of you are listening to the majority of the American people who have clearly stated that what Jenni Carlson and the Oklahoman did was wrong and without their wrong the ensuring events would not have happened. Ed Kelley decided to take a very cheap shot at the people of this Great Nation, the Great State of Oklahoma and those of us who genuinely care about Oklahoma State University in saying that we have misplaced priorities and should be focusing our attention more on the education and Presidential status at Oklahoma State University . While I appreciate his report (somewhat) it was very distasteful distributing it at this time to try and take heat off of Jenni Carlson and the OPUBCO family for a very obvious mistake that they made. I have trust in Oklahoma State University and the people within it and outside of it within the State Government of Oklahoma to do their jobs to make sure that not only Oklahoma State University officials are doing their jobs but also for the University of Oklahoma and any other publicly funded schools, colleges, and University officials are also doing their jobs. Because I am and always will be an Oklahoman no matter where I live and work. Yes, I am an Oklahoma State fan but this issue goes way deeper than allegiance to school lines and all of us would do well to remember that. Because I am and always will be an Oklahoman no matter where I live and work. Yes, I am an Oklahoma State fan but this issue goes way deeper than allegiance to school lines and all of us would do well to remember that. Shortly I will make my last visit to the NEWSOK.com website and can assure you I will avoid your news organizations like the plague. Tulsa World, KOCO, KFOR, KC STAR I am a new customer. P.S. Frankly, many people who write have an attitude that "freedom of the press" provides them the luxury of accounting on everyone elses attitudes and decisions with no accountability of their own.
I am glad for the Gundy response, even though it was a bit over the top. Unfortunately these days, you can't just ask nicely. Otherwise, someone will tell you your momma feeds you too much chicken.
Hopefully, Jenni will start reporting and stop opinionating.
OK, from my perspective and opinion, here is your answer. NO, Carlson isn't going to apologize. If she was going to, the paper would have made her do it by at least Monday. Yes, the paper, and its outside legal staff, have reviewed the issues and her sources. They are firm and they are ready. Now my suspicions, AGAIN, my suspicions: The Cowboys' football program has done everything they could for Reid. They have done figurative head-stands for him. (And Carlson has the data. That is why she won't apologize and Gundy won't delineate the inaccurate statements in her article.) For whatever reason, it might be Reid, it might be Gundy and the staff, but Reid hasn't reached his potential. And Rajika, "mother of children"(my guess who Gundy was referring to), is upset about it. And she probably approached Gundy just before the Saturday press conference. Gundy basically lost it-towards Carlson. (Not a good signal for a Divsion I head football coach.) Gundy has "anger management" problems. He was three steps away from something really problematic. (And don't think the female staff he works with in the athletic department didn't notice. (He is now a "walking litigation timebomb".) So the Reids are purportedly going to file a lawsuit. OK. But it is going to make it tough for Reid to play the remainder of this year and next in Oklahoma. He only has one year of eligibility left. Will he transfer? Will he declare early in the NFL draft? (Good luck on that.) Will he go to the CFL? And to further exacerbate the issue, the Oklahoman is now really investigating OSU. ("Misplaced Priorities": Doesn't sound good.) All in all, Gundy has done just a bang-up job. He has let the national football public know there is a "possible" coaching inadequacy of a highly touted recruit? (Maybe-maybe not.) He has drawn so much attention to the issue, litigation is being contemplated. He has seriously jeopardized his university's standing. And he has shown his "anger management" problems. Not a bad day's work. Oh, I forgot to mention, as he did in his Saturday press conference, his team won Saturday.
Ms. Carlson, not just you but I wish all media persons in sports would just report what happens on the field and let the rest of it go. As an example, last week I viewed the OU - Tulsa game on ESPN2 and was quite annoyed when the announcers missed calling several plays on the field because they were busy talking about Notre Dame. But, I digress. I don't believe Coach Gundy was wrong in calling you up on what many of us viewed as a mean-spirited column, but he should have handled it with greater grace and dignity. As I stated in a comment on another article, two wrongs do not make a right -- and that applies in both directions.

Why did not not address these two false statements ? Instead you hide behind some BS line "coach Gundy, tell me where my story is in error". He told you. You have ignored him and have tried to shift the focus.
NO ONE has respect for you.

Of course, he did give her a couple of specific matters that he took exception with (i.e. Reid threatening to transfer), but she still says she's "waitin got hear the argument against even one." What is the point if she doesn't listen?

I am glad for the Gundy response, even though it was a bit over the top. Unfortunately these days, you can't just ask nicely. Otherwise, someone will tell you your momma feeds you too much chicken.
Hopefully, Jenni will start reporting and stop opinionating.
