Struggling Sam: Bradford throws two costly interceptions

By Jake Trotter

OU quarterback Sam Bradford came into Saturday second in the nation in passing efficiency.

But against Colorado, Bradford was hardly efficient.

He completed just 8 of 19 passes for 112 yards with two picks and a touchdown.

Bradford's two costly interceptions came in the second half, including one that setup a CU touchdown.

"I think I missed some throws today,” he said.

Bradford also failed to connect with receiver Malcolm Kelly once. Kelly — OU's leading receiver last year — has just 17 receptions through five games.

Colorado had Kelly double covered for much of the game, but so has every other defense OU has faced this year.

The difference?

In the past, OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson has called specific plays that get the ball in Kelly's hands.

Saturday, either Wilson didn't call them, or Bradford checked off to other receivers.

Either way, Bradford struggled without Kelly involved.

Now let's be fair here! Not all the blame falls on should fall on that kid's shoulders. Were there mistakes: yes. dropped balls: yes. Now lets get to the gritty. Where was the line blocking? There were no open holes for any running game. What are those big 300 pounders doing? Napping? Poor Sam was under pressure alot too! Where was the blocking then? Napping again? And would someone tell that stupid punt returner to get UNDER THE BALL WHEN CATCHING? What's this leaning into the catch and falling to the knees? If you have to let it go, let it go! Get under the ball!!!!! Take nothing from Colorado. They were fired up and ready to play. The Sooners were caught reading their own press again. It happens all the time with them. Tell them they're good all the time and they believe it. Get back to practice. Practice your basics: block, catch and tackle. You'll be ok. Speaking of tackling, there wasn't a whole lot of that going on either. It was a team loss and not the QB's.

Now this article seems to want to hang the blame on a redshirt freshman QB who did not do nearly as bad as some of the others. How about an article on the stoopified coaching effort?

The Sooners are OVERRATED! In fact the entire Big 12 stinks... including my Buffs.

Struggling Sam? He and DJ Wolfe were the only Sooners that played well!!!!

Despite that, the same refs that stole the TTech game from us, messed this game up as well. Running into the punter, making up a trap call, not calling clipping nor holding on CU, giving dual possession to the defense and not the offense.

Close game + crooked Big 12 refs = Sooner Loss

Finley's too busy playing on facebook and myspace to worry about catching balls!

Jake. Did you WATCH the game? Bradford wasn't as sharp as usual, but there were at least five drops and every interception was a catchable ball. Iglesias cost OU that game. He contributed to two interceptions and two or three drops. If you want to hammer Wilson, ask him why they stopped throwing to the TE's. When they were hitting the TE's the run game was popping. Not utilizing Gresham more (I know Finley dropped a LOT of balls) is what really hurt OU.

Same ole, same ole, no defense/poor offense play calling, who does that? the overpaid coaches. Why did we let Pelini (sp) go to LSU? DUH!

Wilson? Oh MY! Patrick to the left, I think 5 or so times. NO short passes over the middle, no pitch outs, no reverse, the Buffs played better, more energy, and wanted to win and did. Embarrising for OU and overrated too.

Did you watch the game or just read the stats? Is he suppose to throw and catch the pass? For you stat watcher only the qb is penalized on a drop or tipped pass especially one that goes for an interception. As far Kevin Wilson not able to get Malcolm Kelly in the game plan, I call that BS. Playmakers make PLAYS regards of coverage man-to-man or double, if Miami with two All-American candidate couldn't get the job done neither would have Colorado without assistance from Kevin Wilson's three runs and a pass offense. Even with grandma as defensive coordinator she could have predicted the next call.

Don't blame Sam..Ist two passes dropped, several others dropped or tipped. Bad play calling and defensive exhaustion kept the ball away from OU.
Lets learn by mistakes and win BIG 12...

What "specific plays" has Wilson called in the past Jake??? Have you seen that ESPN magazine commercial where the guys are talking out of their arses?

It all gets down to this. OU was outcoached in every phase of the loss to Colorado, just like the Sooners always are when a game is on the line and not a runaway. The Buffs deserved to win, but no matter the opponent, Stoops, Wilson (Long before him), Venables and Wright have not been able to get it done in most close games since, oh, about 2000. The best coaching staff money can buy? Where do we get a refund?

Lehr,
I was thinking when I saw "Struggling Sam" good deal Gundy isn't the coach or he would go off again.

very bad display of football talent on Oklahoma's part. No offense, no defence = a loss. :(
The Stoops crew cannot seem to find Sooner Magic in a tight game.

Anyone thinking Sam was not going to go through some struggles has false expectations. First Big 12 game on the road. Sam wasn't playing on defense though. Just a matter of time now til Mike is back, Brent and Bob just don't seem to capture the cohesive chemistry Bob and Mike share, obviously. Every year has the same common theme, "underachieving defense". Are they being put in the right position? "McNeal Syndrome" is happening more often since Mike left. Is Wright the future considering he has the best secondary in the country, yet repeated torching? Tulsa gave us a glimpse of the reality, they're defense was just too weak against our o-line. Boys played they're butts off, looking more like coaching week to week. Please Bob, demote Brent and bring Mike back. The two of you are the winning combonation!!!!!!

Mentally weak and lethargic in tight games, especially on the road. Stoops is NOT a big-time tactician and seems to lack the ability to prepare a team to play well on the road. OU lost to a team that was blown out by ASU and FSU, they could beat the Patriots and the season would still be lost.

Here's my theory: In addition to the external pressure (Colorado DBs), Juaquin Iglesias faced a lot of internal pressure from OU coaches livid about his no-one-can-stop-us quote from last week. That had to make him tentative. He's a respected, but not feared, receiver. If there's a criticism of Sam, it should be that he should have tried harder to get the ball to Malcolm Kelly. You need to get the ball to your future All-Pro instead of someone who is always open because the DBs are doubling up on the All-Pro.

Five of the top ten teams lost. 7 of the top 13 teams lost. #3 OU lost by 3 ON THE ROAD. #7 Texass lost by 20 AT HOME. #4 Florida lost by 3 AT HOME. #10 Rutgers lost by 10 AT HOME! Yeah... OU is the most overrated team in the nation. *rolls eyes* Jerry, thank you for reminding me just how stupid and retarded texans are. Idiot!

Mike they have one of the most talented secondaries in the nation and do every year. It is just piss poor defensive coaching that ruins them. Venables couldn't coach a junior high team.

How about getting Bradford some decent coaching and some offenses scemes to be able to move the ball on a 2-2 football team. These coaches are horrible.

Bradford started the season as a game manager. We hope he can just facilitate the game. After blow out wins against Miami and the Sisters of the Poor, he is a serious Heisman Candidate. Now he is struggling. Make up your minds, WHAT IS HE? I am confused.

Bradford did all they asked him to. He can't carry the ball out and tape it to his receivers. None of those picks were his. OU's secondary sucks, too. They haven't had a really good corner since Derrick Strait.

Yeah, they'll be ready for Texas Kenny, too bad it doesn't matter anymore. They may get the Big 12 championship, I doubt it, but Stoops and Venables will still get out coached in the BCS game just like the last three times. That Boise State debacle was ugly. Now I just hope OSU somehow beats them.

Sam played fine. The play calling was quite different and the play of the receivers was not up to par. Too many drops at too many critical times, including OU's last possession. We should have had a first down. Our receivers have to catch the ball when they get hit. And they just didn't do that.

Gee, I guess they can stop ingraving Bradford's name on the Heisman Trophy. It's amazing what happens when you play someone. So much for the cream puffs. Get ready for the "Bigs". It doesn't get any easier after today.
