Among 19 high powered bands from across the state, the Westmoore Band and Guard showed off their music, choreography and marching expertise in their performance - "Of Royal Silk and Scarlet," music of Sir William Walton, and was awarded 2d place trophies in both afternoon preliminary and evening finalist competitions.
The 18 hour day started with a morning practice at the high school, bus trip to Owasso, warm-ups in a hot, windy parking lot, preliminary performance at 4 PM, selection of the top twelve bands for finals and dinner on the run in the assembly area. The finals started at 7 PM with Westmoore drawing a wonderful final performance slot at 9:45 PM. This slot guarantees full attention of the audience of thousands and appreciation of the judges who have now seen all of the bands perform. Awards were presented in front of a massing of about 1,500 kids from the twelve bands with a thundering drum line comprised of nearly 100 drummers, their cadence leading all the performers onto the football field. The field was packed full with sparkling uniforms, shiny instruments and feathered caps from goal line to goal line.
Westmoore Band's impressive work is the result of more than two months practice 2-3 hours per day in the band room and parking lot at Westmoore and some preliminary work at half-time football shows and the Moore Outdoor Music Festival held last weekend.
