HENNESSEY — Crews are clearing rubble this morning in the aftermath of a large fire that destroyed at least two buildings in downtown Hennessey.

A portion of U.S. 81 that is the main street in the Kingfisher County town was closed as crews from surrounding areas helped battle the blaze.

The fire was out by late Sunday. There were no injuries.

Shortly after the blaze was contained, crews began working on knocking down the unstable remains of the destroyed structures.

The blaze began about 7 p.m. Sunday in the old American Legion Building near Main and Oklahoma, a Hennessey police dispatcher said.

The dispatcher said the building may have been vacant.

Flames spread to a next-door building and then to a third.

Firefighters from several nearby communities helped battle the blaze, including Dover, Kingfisher, Enid and Okeene, the dispatcher said.
