MUSKOGEE — The city of Muskogee hopes to attract more tourists using a nature-based marketing program.

City officials say the "Birds, Blooms and Butterflies” program is designed to encourage people who come for the eastern Oklahoma city's annual Azalea Festival to return for bird and butterfly watching.

Mayor Wren Stratton says she expects the program to have critics but says it should pay for itself.

Seth Davidson, a Los Angeles attorney and a former president of a company specializing in nature and heritage tourism, says Muskogee's idea to use nature to attract tourists is a good one.

He says the wildlife resources in the area are outstanding. He also says that bird watchers typically are more upscale in nature and have more disposable income.

OK Muskogee, lets be truthful about your community. First of all, you are not called "Little Chicago" for no good reason. Secondly, how about putting some kind of timing on your lights on US 69? It takes about 20 minutes just to get through you little hamlet because of the 10 controlled intersections you have to go through. You install red lights like its a badge of honor. Thirdly, the biggest part of the town that most people see is the lowest quality of construction and design. It goes from burned out shells of buildings to walmarts that are now DHS and WIC centers. How does that make your little town look with WIC centers being the biggest buildings people see from US 69. Forthly and last, you need to get the Oklahoma Transportation Authority a.k.a. Turnpike people to put a bypass from just South of your town to join up with the Muskogee Turnpike. That way people can swing way East to all the newer retail and motel areas. I say avoid the US 69 area alltogether. Trucks will just speed by and free up the traffic snags of US 69. Since Stipe is out of the picture, the OTA could put in the bypass without having people on US 69 putting him on your rear hind quarters. OTA wanted to to this for McAlester and Stipe blocked it. Now McAlester has a horrible death record on US 69 throug its town. So bad that people were dying every week in front of Walmert and Giacomo's. Now the city has put up baracades to keep people from crossing 69 at Walmart.
