We have to blitz in order to get pressure on the QB, ever since we won our last national championship it seems OU plays not to lose instead of playing to win.

Lack of pressure was because Colorado started holding, holding, HOLDing and HOLDING. No pressure and big running lanes. Finally they got called for it twice late in the game and all of sudden no more running lanes. By that time D was a little tired and CU made just enough plays.

Hey...football "wizard"...the defensive pass rush will be slowed by a mobile quarterback...as in Paul Smith and Cody Hawkins....

The defense played well for nearly three quarters. The altitude and fatigue got to them in the fourth. The offense needed to help keep them off the field, but they had a bad day. It happens that great offenses have off days. That's why they say defense wins championships. I agree with Mitch about 90% of the time, but he needs to look at Wilkinson's record his last few years. Also I believe Switzer lost to every big 8 team but KSU, and had many close calls. Stoops had one great recruiting class go bad, but has now got the talent level and experience level back to where it should be. If this type of play continues, then I will agree with you that we have a problem that needs to be addressed. Let's wait until the season is over to make that determination.

Lea, you are entirely too level-headed for a forum like this! Clearly, your comments are perfectly correct...everyone has bad days and bad games. OU has fewer than most, and I have about 60 years of watching OU football as evidence. Your comment about the scholarship limitations cuts to the very heart of the matter. In Wilkinson's day, OU routinely passed out scholarships to a couple hundred players and continued them even if they evenutally cut the players. They could just go to class, and not necessarily at OU !! If they wanted to play FB somewhere else, OU would still pay their way as long as it wasn't at UT, OSU, (then OAMC) or a Big-7 school. One year Wichita U beat Okla A&M with 17 of their starting 22 players on scholarships paid by OU. What could Stoops accomplish under those kind of rules??

I just heard on the radio again how OSU is in first place and playing the Texags for first place while OU and Texas face the sellar! This is after one week! OSU leading the conference at this moment is like being in first place in the Boston Marathon after 6 blocks!

Brian, I agree with you. The defense was completely gassed. What did the offense run, like 25 plays in the second half? Unacceptable. Where we really got hurt was when we stopped throwing to the TE's. Don't give too much credit to CU's LB's; it's easy to make a tackle when you aren't blocked. Our tackles were constantly blocking the same guy as the TE and the LB's just shot right through the line. We were confused by the 3-4 that CU was running. Obviously, our guys are either morons or not being coached up on the sidelines.

I don't know what you guys are yapping about but, the defence sold out to win that game. The played their butts off for 2/3 of that game. I don't blame the defence for losing that game because they couldn't get a pass rush. THEY WERE TIRED!! The only thing that coaches didn't do right was play calling. Kevin Wilson was being stubborn and trying too run over CU not seeing that the CU defence was flying to the ball and overrunning the play to stop the run. The backside was wide open all day for a misdirection play which might have gone the distance. And for you people that don't like the coaching staff, you need to go back to being OSU fans. Reggie Smith needs to get under the ball to catch it and not that akward off balance, falling down thing that he does.

Lea, you may disagree but Im not delusional about this. Barry Switzer NEVER lost to Kansas State. Are you having a delusion? KSU beat OU in 1969 when Fairbanks was at the helm and not again until Gibbs was coaching. Switzer lost to Colorado just once,in 1976 ,when Colorado tied for the title. I said Stoops started like Wilkinson which includes the National Title. I said that the past few years are "more like" Gibbs than Wilkinson. I am seeing a program that is getting very conservative and is not perfroming as well as it should in many games. Stoops can get back to the Wilkinson and Switzer levels but they must play better. You cant be an "elite legend" with the type of losses OU has been suffering. No one wants a return to Blake or Schnellenberger but Stoops and his staff have declined. The question is whether this decline will be minimal or or progressive. You cant keep blowing leads and losing to inferior teams and be the premier coach.

Why does Venables teach our DB's to give a 10 yard cushion to receivers in obvious passing downs? They never get a hand on the ball...they just go for the tackle after the catch...for a 1st down! The pass better be off because our DB's are not going to touch it. What ever happened to them being so close that they know what "flavor of gum they're chewing"? I cringe on 3rd and long because I know what's coming!

Mitch, you are delusional, Jason, you need to get a life. #1 how many confrence championships did Gibbs teams' win? The answer is 0. How many NC's did Gibbs teams play for? 0. How many bad games has Reggie Smith had? How many fumbled punts has Reggie Smith had in the 2+ seasons he's been here? You guys are fair weather fans at best. You guys don't really remember the times Barry Switzer's teams lost to the KSU's and CU's of the world. You guys need to remember that we all have bad days, at least us mere mortal humans do. I expect that even though Reggie Smith and the Sooners seem like supermen that they too are mere mortals subject to being beat. We also need to remember that that college football is not like it was when Bud and Barry were coaching. Now we have scholarship limits and all the "little teams" are now getting blue blood athlets too. So in closing, you guys need to lighten up a little a realize how good we OU fans have had it since Stoops and his bunch has taken over.

How bout blitzing Reggie Smith every once in a while... He's good at having balls bounce off his hands. Maybe he can get in the backfield and nock a few passes down!

Stoops started off like Bud Wilkinson. Great special teams, fast offenses and superb defenses...played with gusto and enthusiasm. The last few years its more like Gary Gibss. Predictable, inconsistent, losing when heavily favored and often " playing not to lose"....There is plenty of talent as evidenced by recruiting.. Im not saying Stoops cant coach or that Gibbs was a bad coach. But the parrallels to coach Wilkinson are fading fast.Another good comparison is Fred Akers. Akers started 11-1 and then consistently won 9 games for a few years and then started the dreaded 4 loss scenarios and eventually was forced out. When you look at Gibbs and Akers record its good... but something about them leaves you less than inspired. Hopefully Coach Stoops isnt joining that club.
