OSU linebacker Nethon has a career day putting the stops to Cornhuskers

LINCOLN, Neb. — Oklahoma State linebacker Jeremy Nethon got a little more action than he expected on Saturday.

Tim Beckman, OSU's defensive coordinator, said Nethon was busy because Nebraska was running to his side most of the game.

Nethon laughed afterward: "Them linemen coming toward ya, you know. Once you're in it it's like you gotta man up. They're big. They weren't lying, corn-fed, you know.”

Nethon more than handled his own against Nebraska's corn-fed line, playing one of the best games of his season. Nethon recovered a fumble, deflected a Nebraska pass that Rodrick Johnson intercepted, and got the stops on both third and fourth down in a crucial series for Nebraska. On that series, early in the fourth quarter, the Huskers drove down the field to OSU's 10. On third-and-two Nethon and Andre Sexton tackled Quentin Castille for no gain. Nebraska went for it on fourth down, and Nethon again tackled Castille for no gain.

"It's a momentum breaker and a tempo breaker,” Beckman said. "They drove the ball down on us and we were kind of on our heels for a little bit and then …we actually brought Jeremy through the ‘B' gap on that play and he cleared and made a great play.”

Nethon said it was "one of the big plays” of the game.

"Just being able to stop a team that's driving and had momentum,” Nethon said. "I just seen the running back coming out and I just told myself, ‘I have to make this play.'”

As for the fumble, Nethon joked that he might embellish that story when he tells it.

"I'm going to lie about it, say I picked it up and ran,” Nethon said. "I wanted to, but I will just lie and say I did — I ran over some people.”
