Breaking down Iowa State
Location: Ames, Iowa

Enrollment: 25,741

Nickname: Cyclones

Conference: Big 12 North

Record: 1-5, 0-3 Big 12

Last game: The Cyclones were Texas' first Big 12 victim as the Longhorns ended a four-game conference losing streak dating to last season with a 56-3 rout at Iowa State.

Best player: Bret Meyer is only a year removed from being named preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, but he has had his share of struggles. He has thrown for 1,390 yards, completing 60.5 percent of his passes. But he's been intercepted 10 times while throwing just five TDs.

Why they could win: Oklahoma's only other true road game turned out to be a disaster in Colorado. Perhaps the Cyclones can pattern their game plan after the Buffs'.

Why they could lose: Among a variety of reasons, the Cyclones will have trouble stopping the OU offense. They rank in the bottom half of the Big 12 in nearly every defensive category.

Noteworthy: The Iowa State mascot is a cardinal for good reason. That was the school's original nickname. It was changed to Cyclones in 1895, a year in which Iowa experienced a high number of tornadoes. After Iowa State's 36-0 upset of Northwestern, the next day's headline in the Chicago Tribune read, "Struck by a Cyclone,” and the name was later adopted.

ISU can try Colorado's game plan, but they just don't have the horses to make it work. All season long the 'Clones have had real problems getting the ball into the end zone (something like 17 points against Nebraska, 13 points against DI-AA Northern Iowa, 3 points against Texas), and have had big problems defending against any real offense (the Hawkeyes don't count). Only real factor in the final score wil be how long Stoops leaves the starters in.

I cannot help but wonder what is going through the Sooner players' minds thinking about Iowa State. It should be a blow out along the lines of North Texas and Tulsa but without the Tulsa offense. However, if they thing that way with a few turnovers it could become a game. I do not think it will come to that as I see OU winning by a 62 to 7 score. I hope I am right.
