IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys talked brave. Talked like a team has to talk if it believes it will get another shot at this runaway freight train of a football team called the New England Patriots.

Tony Romo said it came down to one or two plays.

Terrell Owens said it could have gone either way.

But here lies the truth of New England's 48-27 victory over Dallas on Sunday at Texas Stadium. This verdict does not dampen the likelihood that Dallas will reach Super Bowl 42. It does suggest what will happen to the Cowboys if they get there.

Tom Brady threw a career high five touchdown passes, Oklahoma City's Wes Welker produced a career day with 11 catches for 124 yards and two TDs, and the Patriots showed why they just might be a team for the ages.

New England became just the fifth team in NFL history to open the season with six wins by double-digit margins, joining the '68 Cowboys, '34 Bears, '42 Bears and '99 Rams.

And the fact that Dallas somehow led the Patriots deep into the third quarter should not skew reality. New England is the better team, and by a long shot.

"We want to be one of the elite teams, but obviously we're not,” said Dallas coach Wade Phillips, whose squad also had jumped out 5-0 and, at 5-1, still remains tied with Green Bay for the NFC's best record.
