WELCH — Two Pittsburg, Kan., brothers died when their family van and a 104-car freight train collided at a country crossing in
Craig County.
Dead are:

John Patrick Short, 15, Pittsburg, Kan..
•
Nicholas Short, 17, Pittsburg, Kan.
Both teen were dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, one mile south of Welch, the
Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
The teens' father,
John L. Short, 46, was driving when he pulled onto the railroad tracks in front of the train.
The train struck the van in the right rear.
There were six family members in the van, all wearing seat belts, the patrol said. The two victims who died both were thrown out of the van.
John Short was treated and released at
Craig General Hospital in Vinita, as was his wife,
Sara Short, 42, and their daughter, Alaura Short, 12.
A second daughter,
Katherine Short, 10, was taken by Eagle Med Air Ambulance to
Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., where she was listed in guarded condition.
No one on the
Union Pacific train was injured.
