MUTUAL — Luis Miguel Jimenez, a California truck driver, is recovering at an Oklahoma City burn unit two days after a fiery crash on a busy northwestern Oklahoma highway left four dead and investigators trying to piece together what went wrong.

Dead are:

Debra Diane Green, 54, Seiling.

•Roger Daily Green, 60, Seiling.

Arthur Adam Hebert, 73, Anniston, Ala.

Joann Singleton Hebert, 63, Anniston, Ala.

What happened
Jimenez, 30, of Escondido, Calif., was driving a tractor trailer westbound on U.S. 270 about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when he failed to stop for a construction zone and slammed into a line of vehicles waiting to be directed through, according to a patrol report.

The last vehicle in the line, a pickup driven by James Thomas Goree, 48, of Woodward spun around 360 degrees and turned over before coming to rest in a ditch.

Goree was treated for injuries and later released from Woodward Regional Hospital.

A second pickup, driven by the Greens, was caught under the approaching rig, which then plowed into the Heberts' car, pushing it into the back of a cattle trailer, the report states.

The Greens' pickup, the Heberts' car and the tractor trailer all caught fire in the collision.

Clint Gene Hixon, 48, of Yale was driving the rig pulling the cattle trailer. He wasn't injured in the crash. His rig also was pushed into a pickup at the front of the line, driven by Thomas E. Nichols, 21, of Cheste, who also escaped injury.

Jimenez was flown to the burn unit at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted in serious condition. He was upgraded to good condition by Wednesday evening and is being treated for second-degree burns to about 11 percent of his body, said Brooke Cayot, hospital spokeswoman.

Prosecutors are waiting until the highway patrol completes its investigation to determine whether criminal charges are warranted, according to the patrol. Troopers may need to question Jimenez.

The aftermath
Troopers said it took as long as nine hours to remove some victims from their vehicles. None of the survivors were pinned in their vehicles. All of the dead and injured, with the possible exception of Jimenez, were wearing seat belts, according to the report.

The highway remained closed for more than 11 hours, reopening shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

I'm just curious how the officer knew Mr. Jiminez was asleep at the wheel. Not that I'm saying he wasn't, but if his burns were so severe that he was flown to the hospital I'm doubting he was saying a whole lot.

Kari is right, they're not true accidents, and if you've ever pulled one of the reports you'll find the state doesn't call them that either. They call them collisions which is a more accurate description. It's just a play on semantics though so not that big of a deal in my book. If this truck driver was not drunk or on drugs or committing some egregious violation, he'll more than likely be charged with four counts of Negligent Homicide which is a misdemeanor. Each count (if I'm not mistaken) carries a maximum penalty of $1000 and a year in jail.

Justice will be served one day. Nobody on Earth knows when that "one day" will come, but it will. It is not up to you or I to judge anyone. Let the HP and OSBI complete thier investigation and hand out the charges. GOD BLESS!!!!

Mike- The hospital will not give information because of the Hipaa law. His ex-wife says to call hospital, give some info that you know of Luis, and she says she will talk to you on Luis's condition, ask to put you through the room.

Mike, I love how you phrase it “I’m sorry people are dead, but people make a mistake, that’s why they are called accidents” This is a load of bull. Perhaps this is how my best friend should tell her 3 week old baby girl that her grandparents Debra and Roger Green died, by accident. This was no accident, this was negligence. An officer on the scene told one of the family members that Mr. Luis Jimenez was asleep at the wheel. Clearly that means he was driving when he shouldn’t have been. This gentleman clearly lacked the ability to make the decision to pull over and sleep, rather he decided to keep going and ended up causing four people to loose their lives. There is no sympathy from me to him when this is an “accident” that clearly could have been avoided. I do however feel for his family and what they are going through. I am not here to judge this man, he will be judged by GOD in the end. I just merely want everyone to understand that although people do make mistakes, this was one that could have been avoided. Please pray for the families of the deceased and quit bickering back and fourth about the man whose negligence caused the horrific accident.

Mike, probably one reason the hospital cannot communicate openly with your family is HIPAA. You should ask them to seek permission from your cousin. He can sign a release for them to give youinformation when you call.

WHY IS IT when there is an accident involving an 18 wheeler some people just naturally assume the driver was on drugs or alcohol? I will agree there are some drivers that are drug users, but not ALL of them are. This has been a horrific accident and we should be praying for the families, not laying blame on anyone. Luis will have to live with the thoughts of what happened for the rest of his life. Lets let the HP and OSBI do their job and investigate. ALL of these families need our prayers right now, not insults.
Orenda, Mooreland - Oct 25, 2007 at 9:17 am
To Levi- My daughter and my grand-daughter have nothing to do with this accident, nor does their marriage. It is very unfortunate that this has happened. Our focus should be on praying for the families that have lost loved ones, and for Luis's recovery. If she was such a horrific person, as you are making her out to be, she wouldn't be at his side taking care of him and comforting him. She has been there from day one. This was actually at his request. I believe that my Lord and Savior will take care of this, and all involved, as he is GOOD!

Those logs don't always tell how long they have really been driving. They alter them, to earn more money.
Carrie, Choctaw - Oct 25, 2007 at 7:47 am
HOW COULD SOMEONE IN A SEMI SITTING THAT HIGH OFF OF THE GROUND NOT SEE A LINE OF CARS STOPPED IN FRONT OF HIM I BELIEVE THAT THE DRIVER SHOULD BE TESTED FOR DRUGS AND ALCOHOL AND HIS LOG BOOKS SHOULD BE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE HE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVING LONGER THAN THE LAW ALLOWS

If all of you cousins out there would read the article above, you would see that he has been upgraded to good condition with second degree burns to 11% of his body as of Wednesday evening. As for saying "You guys have no compassion for anything", apparently you didn't read that most of these people are praying for your family. And I didn't see any racial slurs. I think you could spend your time better worrying about your cousin than reading what people are saying. And I AM sorry that this happened. I have prayed that God give your cousin comfort and that he will heal quickly.

Mike, Riverside - Here is part of an article I found in the Woodward paper at woodwardnews.net this evening. "Jimenez was flown to the burn unit at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted in serious condition.

He was upgraded to good condition by Wednesday evening and is being treated for second-degree burns to about 11 percent of his body, said Brooke Cayot, hospital spokeswoman." I hope this helps you some in the info search on Luis. I'm glad to hear he is doing better.
Orenda, Mooreland - Oct 24, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Mike, Riverside - I hope you have found the information you seeked on your cousin and I prayer for his quick recovery.

Truth Seeker, Oklahoma City - I have worked for a trucking co. in safety and these trucks are governed for the most part so I highly doubt he was doing over 70. Sometimes it just seems like they are.

RANDY, NEWCASTLE - I haven't read anything that said anyone is taking sides. They are just offering condolences. I was just on this very road twice last week. There may be signs of road construction, but I did not see any signs that said anything about flagpersons or traffic being stopped. If this young man was coming over a hill or even if not who is to say he didn't try to stop. If you are driving 65 mph (the posted speed) and you come up on stopped vehicles without warning how long would it take you to stop your car or maybe a 1/2 ton pickup. So, imagine how long it would take this young man to stop an 18 wheeler even if he had tried to turn in to the ditch as someone else mentioned it could have caused an accident.

How about we let the officers do their job and figure out what happened before we lay blame. Construction signs two miles back? There should have been some closer than that.

My prayers go out to all the families of this tragic accident.

You guys have no compassion for anything. This guy is my cousin and i still have no information about him. I am very sorry for what has to the people that were killed, but people do make mistakes, thats why they are called accidents. I have tried calling the hospital and they will not give me any information about him. My family and i are worried. So please dont pass judgement on someone you do not know. This man is a loving and caring father who is on the road most of the time and hardly gets to see his family. So before you go making your racial slurs and derogatory remarks, learn about the man first. You all disgust me!!! America is built on immigration and another fact, he is an American born and bred just like all of my family.

I have not been on this road so I really don't know the layout, but, why didn't the truck driver head for the ditch or the side of the road before he killed four innocent people?

Jack,
Shame on you as an AMERICAN to be so ignorant. Signs aren't posted in "Mexican" because there is no such language. Just as we speak ENGLISH, they speak Spanish! Just goes to show you how intolerant Oklahomans can really be!

The truck that plowed into the construction line passed me yesterday while I was travelling to Woodward. I was driving somewhere between 65 and 70 miles per hour and he flew by me. He stayed not too far in front of me and a couple of other cars and I'm not sure what happened next. I knew the constuction zone was coming up and began slowing down....but then I saw a red truck fly through the air and cattle spilling onto the roadway. Then came the flames and thick black smoke. The fumes were almost unbearable. I have been re-living that terrible scene through my mind all day. It was something straight out of a scene from a Stephen King movie - I can't describe it. If I had just swiped my card at the pump as I normally do instead of going inside to pay for my gas ....well, I would have been one of the vehicles involved in the crash, I am certain of this. My heart goes out to all of the families of those who were killed and injured. I knew that people had lost their lives in this tragic accident and I felt helpless. I still feel helpless but very lucky to be alive.
Truth Seeker, Oklahoma City - Oct 24, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Burt, I cannot pass judgement, but please consider another outlet. I saw you (if its you) posted the same thing at the Tulsa World and it dissappeared about an hour later. As for my posts, I'm done with Stipe and this story. I wrote my representatives about it and one already responded kindly. Looks like we may be seeing some new construction zone laws after this and the Purcel crash.

This idiot was probably on the cell phone, trying to find the "right" channel on the radio, or just picking lint out of his belly. I don't know those facts like you boo-hoos are so quick to point out, but one fact you can't deny is he wasn't paying attention and innocent lives were lost as a result. I agree with Randy patch this loser up and let him sit and stare at four walls for ten years thinking about what he did. And Mikey, it's ladies like you who have brought this country down a notch! Those were warm and fuzzy thoughts though...

For everyone to know, this is the translation of burt from Edmond's Spanish post: Its soul can posess of demons and it handles crazy person to him. Its wound can of hurt for always. Their son, their children, their grandsons and thousands generatons of their family will know to their shame and the pain. You one will rot in hell and one feels that the pain by an eternity as Satan chooses the meat of bones. All her family will know the shame that you bring them and their eyes will be torn aside.
Valarie, Midwest City - Oct 24, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Burt you are a piece of work. It is people like you that are the reason the world is like it is. How could you even post that about someone? What if it were you in that situation? How would it feel if your family had to read a post like yours? You must be one very intolerant person.
Valarie, Midwest City - Oct 24, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Here's a message for you and your family Mr.loey:
Puede posess de demonios su alma y le maneja loco. Puede su herida de heridas para siempre. Su hijo, sus hijos, sus nietos y mil generatons de su familia sabrán su vergüenza y el dolor. Usted se pudrirá en el infierno y se siente que el dolor por una eternidad como Satanás escoge la carne de huesos. Toda su familia sabrá la vergüenza que usted los trae y sus ojos serán rasgados aparte.
