The Lazy E Arena has invited 20 top ropers to compete for an $80,000 purse this weekend, and the field is stacked.
With National Finals Rodeo berths already decided this year because an earlier cut-off date for cowboys, the Lazy E Arena was able to attract some of the stars of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for the World's Greatest Roper Championship.
Among the contestants are:
• Speed Williams, an eight-time PRCA world champion, who has won nearly $2 million in his roping career.
• Trevor Brazile, a five-time champion of the Lazy E's Timed Event Championship, four-time PRCA All-Around Cowboy and current leader in this season's all-around and tie-down roping.
• K.C. Jones, four-time winner of the Timed Event Championship.
• Jimmie Cooper, former PRCA All-Around Cowboy and three-time Timed Event winner.
• Jim and Jake Cooper, Jimmie's sons, who have qualified for their first NFR this season and finished second last weekend in the pro division at the U.S. Team Roping Championships in Oklahoma City.
• Daniel Green, the defending and only winner of the World's Greatest Roper Championship. Last year was the first year Lazy E has held the event.
Those cowboys and 13 other elite ropers will compete in three roping disciplines this weekend: tie-down roping, team roping heading, and team roping heeling.
All totaled, each contestant will rope 18-head of stock over two days with the top five roping an additional 3-head to determine the champion.
The World's Greatest Roper Championships begins today at the Lazy E Arena with two performances, at 1 and 7:30 p.m..
The final performance on Sunday begins at 1 p.m.
