Skycam to be used in OSU-Kansas game
Herbstreit's a big fan of over-the-field camera

ABC will use commentator Kirk Herbstreit's favorite technological toy for its coverage of the Kansas-Oklahoma State game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Nicknamed "Jet” because it sort of flies around the stadium, skycam will make its Boone Pickens Stadium debut.

A former Ohio State quarterback, Herbstreit loves the over-the-field camera because it brings a quarterback's perspective to the TV coverage. Sitting next to a "Jet” monitor in the booth, Herbstreit gets a replay from the camera after every play, even if it's not replayed in the coverage, coordinating producer Bill Bonnell said.

"When there's a good play, Herbie gets very excited and says, ‘Hey, Bill, I'm sure Jet will have that,'” Bonnell said.

Herbstreit himself does a lot of flying around, at least to game sites after co-hosting ESPN's popular "College GameDay” pregame show Saturday morning. This Saturday, he'll be in Williamstown, Mass., to preview the Division III Amherst College at Williams College game before hopping a charter for about a three-hour flight to Stillwater.

Among the storylines Bonnell said ABC plans to tackle are Kansas' unbeaten season and OSU coach Mike Gundy's tirade after the Texas Tech game.

"Obviously, they (the Jayhawks) are undefeated, but a lot of people don't really know them yet,” Bonnell said. "It's our job this week to introduce them to America.”

Bonnell said play-by-play Brent Musburger will sit down with Gundy to look back at the tirade, which has been parodied in commercials and on YouTube.
