TULSA — Top-ranked Tulsa Union's offense is potent enough without the help of a short field to navigate.

But Brandon Rogers still took advantage of good field position, completing 12 of 18 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns in Tulsa Union's 37-14 victory over No. 6 Putnam City Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A state playoffs at Union Tuttle Stadium.
"Our defense a great job of holding them. A lot times it was three-and-out and they would punt away,” said Rogers. "Coming out with a shorter field it is a lot easier with the play calling and executing knowing we don't have to travel that far to get into the zone.”
A dominating defense combined with the booming kickoffs and punting of Tress Way led to a lopsided field position advantage for the Redskins. Union averaged starting on its own 47-yard-line on six first-half possessions, while Putnam City averaged starting at its own 18 on seven possessions.
Tulsa Union (12-0) took advantage of the field position, scoring on its last five series of the first half for a 31-0 lead. Running back Jeremy Smith scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 2 yards in the half, and Rogers connected on touchdown passes of 44 yards to Anthony Foster and 20 yards to Tyler Atkinson.
Union coach Kirk Fridrich held Smith out for most of the second half, and Smith, who had 86 yards rushing at halftime, finished with 98 yards on 13 carries. Rogers completed 9 of 12 passes for 151 yards in the first half.
"It's important this time of year to stay healthy and as fresh as possible,” said Fridrich of resting Smith.
Quarterback Nico Watson led Putnam City with 71 yards.
