Despite the fireworks displays, appearances from big-name Oklahoma stars and historical nature of the event, some viewers left Friday’s Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular dissatisfied.

Although he was listed as one of the five headliners for the event, country music star Garth Brooks didn’t perform.
“Garth Brooks was very happy to be a presenter at the Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular. He was never intended to perform,” said his spokeswoman, Nancy Seltzer, in an e-mail to The Oklahoman.
During the show, Brooks, 45, delivered a tribute to the victims of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and introduced fellow country luminary Reba McEntire, who sang “If I Had Only Known” in their honor.
“From across the dark abyss of pain and grief where the Murrah building once stood, there now shines a light ... We honor those victims tonight by looking to the future,” Brooks said during the star-studded show.
Brooks, one of the top solo artists in U.S. music history, retired in 2001 to become a stay-at-home dad to his three daughters.
However, Brooks ended his nine-year touring hiatus earlier this month with a series of nine sold-out concerts in Kansas City, Mo. He played the final show, which was simulcast in movie theaters across North America and Europe, two days before the centennial event.
He also recently released a new single, “More Than a Memory,” and three-disc set “The Ultimate Hits.”
On the NewsOK.com forums, some fans expressed confusion, disappointment and anger that Brooks did not sing. One poster described it as “false advertisement,” another as “a pretty low-class thing.”
At the end of the show, some people in the audience seemed to be chanting, “Garth, Garth, Garth.”
In a statement issued to The Oklahoman through Jones Public Relations, the Oklahoma Centennial Commission said Brooks wasn’t performing when he was invited two years ago to be part of the show.
“When the Centennial Commission invited Oklahoma performers to participate in the Centennial Spectacular, they eagerly accepted and volunteered their time and talent. This was nearly two years ago when Garth had chosen to take time off to spend time with his family. Therefore, a special role was created for Garth to honor Oklahomans who were affected by the Murrah Building tragedy on April 19, 1995. Even then, he graciously volunteered to fulfill this heartfelt segment in the program with no compensation because he wanted to show his love for Oklahoma. He presented this powerful segment of the program with extraordinary grace, dignity and compassion,” according to the statement.
“Oklahoma is fortunate to have so many talented sons and daughters who are immensely generous and donated their time and talents to commemorate Oklahoma’s 100th anniversary of statehood.”
Jeanie McCain Edney, the commission’s deputy director, said by the time Brooks began performing again, the program for the spectacular was already locked.
“The spectacular was already scripted, it was timed for telecast, everything had been set. ... We were already extremely, extremely tight on timing, and had trimmed and edited and so forth. So it was impossible to put a number in. Totally impossible,” Edney said, noting the show still ran 20 minutes over the planned two-hour length.
Brooks was the only musician in the extensive, cross-genre lineup who did not perform. The other country music stars identified as headliners — McEntire, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill — played at least one of their songs.
“He was contributing in a very significant and special way to the performance, so we wanted to include him among the performers and we regret if people misunderstood that,” Edney said. “He was willing to take on this role and speak about one of the most momentous and tragic events in the history of our state, (which) we felt deserved recognition. And we are certainly sorry if people were disappointed in that representation. It most certainly should not reflect on Garth.”
At the spectacular’s pre-show press conference, Brooks wowed Underwood, who has called him one of her idols, when he entered in the final few moments. He said it was great to be a part of the event.
He said he loved the sincerity, pride and respectfulness of Oklahomans.
“There’s something about Oklahoma. It’s the land of common sense for me, which I love. You guys have got the best state motto of anybody: Labor conquers all. Shut your mouth, roll your sleeves up and go to work. That’s what we love,” he said.
Edney said hoped people still would have good memories of the spectacular.
“We are just very grateful to everyone who gave — and I mean gave — of their time and talents to this spectacular. And we hope that people will treasure it in the years ahead,” she said.

I did think the show was awesome. The Flaming Lips show was great, although I think Wayne Coyne might have had a sore throat, but he performed anyway. The old guy who sang the first state song was really good. I guess we are putting too much attention on Garth. It just seems so petty on his part that he didn't perform. I agree with John from Norman: Leon Russell, JJ Cale, Elvin Bishop, and maybe the Cross Canadian Ragweed, some Arlo Guthrie (honoring his father), and some Mason Williams, Bread, Chainsaw Kittens, Nixons, and a few others COULD have been invited. But it was a great event. I hated to see it end.

John from Norman is exactly right. No JJ Cale, Leon Russell etc. What was especially disgusting was that Woody's family was not represented. The greatest american folksinger gets slighted once again by his home state. But man, could we get Carrie Undertalent in the spotlight once more. Ask Bob Childers and Tom Skinner about the integrity of Garth. All-in-all, I probably would have enjoyed Rance Howard's part in the production more than anyone else's.
Donna...Before this event, I had never heard of Kelly O'Hara, but have since researched her career. Now I know more about her. So why haven't we heard of her before in Oklahoma. We know all about Kristen Chenoweth, Tony winner, from Oklahoma. Was she asked to be a part of the Centennial Celebration? Perhaps she was busy. That's cool. Anyhow, back to Garth. I still stand by my thinking that he could have simply done one of his songs with just his voice and guitar, and if Wal-Mart had a problem with that, they could have used it as a good will gesture and put a positive spin on it as their way of thanking Oklahoma for Sam Walton.
I call BS on Garth and his camp. You can't tell me that no one asked Garth Brooks to sing at the concert? You can't tell me that someone had to officially ask him to sing at a concert, but invited him to talk. Garth did not become famous for speaking, and is definately not the "voice" of Oklahoma. If it was a contractual problem - he could afford to pay a 10,000 fine if they dared to fine him - after all this is the self proclaimed guy that said his entire family could never spend all the money he has made. Shame on Garth Brooks - may you slip away into your retirement unnoticed and unheard. The rest of the concert was very entertaining and well rounded. Someone said that Hinder wasn't invited because they would not be a good representation of Oklahoma, but I am sure they would have found it deep in their hearts to come out with at least one song for their home state. Thank you to all the ones that did perform, and thank you to those who produced the show minus the sound guy - LOL.
All of you should be ashamed of yourselves! What was the celebration about?? Garth Brooks or Oklahoma?? I can't believe you guys are making such a big deal about him, "false advertisement" give me a freaking break. Grow up, you sound like a bunch of little cry babies. I hope you find something worth griping about because this is so ridiculous. Leave it to us Oklahomans to wine about everything that doesn't go "our" way. I'am embarassed to be an Oklahoman right now because of the stupid "thoughts" that were put on here. I don't want to be associated with these idiots. Hopefully not all Oklahomans are this unappreciative.
I am not sure the big deal about Garth is all about... personally I think he is a wash out.. Personally I lost all respect for the man when he did his exwife wrong the way he did..
I don't think that being retired when the show was planned is the real reason Garth didn't sing. I wish someone would give the real reason that he didn't sing.
Thanks Kelly for the link. Interesting, in that story, they quote Lee Allan Smith as saying that they asked Garth to sing but he couldn't because of contractual issues with his Wal Mart contract. They even quote LAS as saying just before Garth went on stage, they offered again for him to sing and they would work around the time issues. So, that seems to settle it...at least to me...Garth was asked, and he refused because of contractual issues with Wal Mart.
Well, Brooks or no Brooks (I don't really have an opinion on that one way or another, not having all the available facts), I still though it was a pretty good show.
There is a better story at the Friday Newspaper site on this issue. Check it out at www.okcfriday.com. At least they thought to ask Lee Alan Smith about it.
B from OKC...just so you know, and I have this direct from Toby's financials folks: He WAS NOT PAID to do the show. He did not ask for payment, nor was it offered. He received tickets for his family to attend the show, and that is all. He and his band were very honored to be asked to be involved in such an important part of the celebration (honoring our Oklahoma troops), and were not compensated for their time in any way other than being given tickets to the event. I can assure you that this information is accurate. Garth was not asked to sing...OK Events has acknowledged that publicly. They do not want to come out and say those words, but they have acknowledged that they never intended for him to sing, and that a special speaking part was planned for him when he was asked to do the show 2 years ago (in the midst of his retirement). I'm not saying they were right..I think it's a crock that they advertised him as a headliner. (They could have added a line under the actual headliners that read "with a special appearance by Garth Brooks", etc instead.) I think they made a huge mistake, but don't blame Garth for it. He had told them he would do "whatever" they needed him to do, and they advised him that all they needed him to do was present...and he graciously agreed. And to those of you who think Garth's down-to-earth persona is fake, you've obviously never met the man, or know anyone who has run into him in public. Have a great day...
Jean and Nathan - What do you mean "Who Is Kelly O'Hara??????" I can't believe this... Kelly is an accomplished Broadway actress who has co-starred with the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Kelsey Grammer (Yes-Frazier) and Jason Alexander (from Sienfield or as you may know him from Brad Paisley's video) and many many others! She has been nominated for a Tony Award twice (Light in the Piazza and The Pajama Game) and grew up in Elk City and graduated from Oklahoma Christian University. She has an amazing voice and you should be so lucky to see her perform in person!
I think it's a crock that Brooks didn't perform. The idea was to celebrate the State of Oklahoma, and not Garth Brooks, or any of the other performers. He did the state wrong, by not singing just ONE SONG. Come on, what are those notes made of gold? What's to lose to sing something? He was listed as a headliner. He should have performed. That just wasn't right of him.

Shirley Jones sang two songs. Her younger counter part who now play the female leading role in Oklahoma had two solos. Either one could have been cut to only one number and Garth given one of their slots. Those that spluged and/or sacrificed to purchase tickets to see "headliners" perform in their line of entertainment deserved this and it was not too much to ask or expect. A "headliner" who is a vocalist is not expected to give an oratory tribute and introduction to another performer. The public was defrauded.
I have always thought Brooks was a selfish braggard of a jerk- who didn't love Oklahoma nearly as much as he claims. Doesn't everyone remember all the "FREE" concerts he gave in New York's Central Park and in big cities around the country--- just how many [free] concerts has he performed in Oklahoma?--- ZERO, that's how many!!!! He wasn't getting paid the other night, so he didn't sing for us ole Okies, like he has for the New Yorkers & Washington crowd. This is the very same guy who once bragged on television that he had made so much money that his kids kids kids couldn't spend it all-- but he can't even sing a song or two for free at a Oklahoma celebration! Some C/W legend..... I'd boot him to the curb.
I'm not sure this is the whole story for two reasons.
1. The set up for the Memorial performance was very simliar to Brooks' tribute to the Bombing in 95 when he peformed "The Change".
2. Reba McEntire sang "If I Had Only Known", which is a song that she vowed to never sing again after her band died in a plane crash in 92.
I'm curious if whether or not Garth Brooks' performances with Wal-Mart had something to do with him not being able to sing at the Concert.
Whether Garth Brooks performed or didn't perform is of no consequence to me since I chose to feed my family instead of paying the exorbitant price for a ticket. But what I do find disturbing is Garth's pre-show press conference statement: "You guys have got the best state motto of anybody: Labor conquers all." I think it would have been more appropriate to say "we" rather than "you guys." I mean, we're all Oklahomans. Right?
I think the Centennial Commission was doing nothing more than pulling a scam on the people that paid to attend this event. At $145.00 per ticket I'm sure other like myself thought we were going to get more than 1 song from the "Featured Performers". You tell me that there was only time for Carrie Underwood to sing one song, but that Patti Page needed to sing 3..give me a break. This was nothing more than for the people of Oklahoma to get to pay for OETA to have a show to broadcast. Nothing but a rip off...
Who are we to demand a performance by Garth? Can we not be a people who appreciate that he took the time to be there even though he didn't perform? Why have we become an ungrateful and unthankful people? We have much to be thankful for - we should not get into the "demanding what we want- because we can" game or rather ugly mindsets. Be Thankful Oklahoma's!!! We have much to be thankful for.
I would have to agree with Chad and Nathan of OKC. I thought Garth's dedication speech to the OKC bombing victims was great. I believe he is a very sincere person. I loved seeing Reba, Vince, and Carrie sing but I think the highlight of the night was when Toby Keith sang. That song gave me chills and how great was it that our military was there to hear it. I would also agree that Amy Grant or Kelli O'Hara (who is she anyway?)could have been knocked from the show. I loved hearing from Ron Howard's Dad and Willard Scott. I was very disappointed that Garth did not sing but also understand that he was just coming off a 9 concert deal in KC (which he would do that here) and was probably giving his band members time off. Did you know that he flew back and forth every day from Tulsa to KC for those concerts? Reason: so he could be home every morning to take his girls to school! Just because he did not sing doesn't make him any less of an Oklahoman or person than some one who did sing. Give the guy a break!
Here is what I got from the report on the news last night. He was given a speaking part because if he had just a speaking part he would "donate his time." This left me with the impression that if they wanted him to sing, it would cost the commission big bucks, so they said to heck with ya, just talk, we aren't going to pay you. But I do agree the commission did false advertise by saying he was a headliner. To be honest, I really don't care if Garth sang or not, I think he is fake and really only cares about his wallet
Who the heck cares? Garth is the ultimate example of false humility and I guarantee you that whatever he does it's only because it's in his own self-interest! If he'd thought he could've capitlaized in some way by singing, he'd have sung. Obviously, he'd rather leave people "wanting" because it does more to bolster his ego!
Amy Grant can't be away from Vincent (Vince Gill) for any lenght of time. He might out shine her. After all I have really enjoyed spending my money to see Vince and get Amy Grant. She has delusions of fame.
I see both sides of this "issue", but I feel like I have to defend and support his decision to NOT sing, and yes I said HIS decision. Anyone who believes that "the deal" was inked 2 years ago and alterations to that contract could not have been made to allow him to sing is a fool. Like one person said Carrie Underwood was nothing more than your average college student 2 years ago and she made it in the show.
Anyways, back to my main point. Garth could have sung at the event if he wanted to, however he chose not to. You can't tell me that the event organizers wouldn't have wanted him to sing either. But lets throw this analogy out there. Lets say that you worked hard and were very successful in your line of business and then you retired on your own terms. Then on an anniversary of the company that you "used" to work for, they want you to come out of retirement to work for a few days/weeks. On top of that they probably want you to do it at your own expense and are not willing to compensate you what you think your time is worth. Would you do it??? I don't know that I would.
For some to say that Garth "owes" the state for his success is complete nonsense too. Why does he owe "the state"?? If anything he owes the fans and those who bought concert tickets, CDs and merchandise. I think in his own way he has repaid the fans since retirement (i.e box sets, 9 shows from KC, unreleased material, etc.) I'm sure there are many things to come from the Garth Brooks camp, musically, down the road. I'm sorry it wasn't at the precious Centennial Celebration, but you'll hear from him again...
Garth will do about anything to get a little attention. Remember when they sold tickets to his OKC concert and you only had so many minutes to buy tickets at each outlet???I sure do because I sat in the nose bleed section for the same price my sister-in-law spent to sit near the stage, however her husband sat 6 rows behind her. What a mess. I still remember. Never liked to look at him and his fat head anyway. BARF BROOKS who cares?
Wow. I was going to buy tickets for my mom and the only question she asked was "Garth is really going to sing right?" We ended up making other plans to attend an out of state wedding but I sure am glad I didn't buy the tickets now!! I'm sorry to those who got ripped off! Garth Brooks is the only reason people wanted to go.
If this Wal-Mart contract thing is correct, could not Wal-Mart as a gesture of gratitude to Oklahoma, bend the rules for this event? After all, Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton was from Kingfisher, Oklahoma!
I heard he couldn't sing because his contract with Wal-Mart prevented him from doing so and apparently Wal-Mart wouldn't make an exception for the Centennial show.
The Centenninal Celebration had its highs and lows. To me, one of the best segments was Rance Howard sharing his Oklahoma experience. And of course I enjoyed the opener with Vince and Reba. And who in the world is Kelly O'Hara? Apparently we are supposed to "know" who she is. Anyway, I was a little surprised by Garth not singing. He did a rather nice job of honoring the victims of April 19 and I applaud him for being there. But how difficult would it have been for him to walk out with a guitar and sing a song by himself? If it was a time consideration, they could have bumped Amy Grant from the program.
Jackie of Moore, you hit the nail on the head. It is all about the money. I wasn't there, but I would have felt blest if I had been there. The TALENTED people DID perform. As far as I am concerned Garth Brooks is, and always has been a big jerk.
What! This newspaper reads what goes on here? Anyway, give the guy a break. I watched on TV and was very touched by Garth's speech. He is not our slave to sing or not as we wish. I also wished I had been able to be there in person. I don't know how much the tickets cost, but I bet they compare well for shows where you see 1 act, not as many as we saw. I liked Ron Howard's dad, and Willard too. Maybe I am just not extremely picky. I didn't know Nadia Colemenich (sp?) was an Oklahoman now, so that was another good part of the celebration.
I was shocked that we didnt get a show after the show for paying what we did to see that crap. I can tell you that is not what they made it sound like it was going to be. What a BIG JOKE!!!I can not believe the bit about Garth being retired. If it was not for Oklahoma supporting Garth he would not be in the position that he is now. He would still be playing in the small bars. Maybe that is where he should be for being so disrespectful to his HOMETOWN fans. What a slap in the face. When the commision asked him to speak he should have taken the inititive to ask if he could sing.
I agree Amy Grant is not even from Oklahoma and they gave her time on stage....Why?
I felt cheated. I think we all expected more from these people. Not having Garth or any one of the others not perform was crazy. What were they thinking. We all expected more than we got. Very disappointed in this celebration. It came up very short. We thought that since we paid money to come we would get a little extra in the end. What were we thinking.
I agree that there is more too this than the P.R. spin. Garth Brooks is legend in country and western music and for him not to perform at the event just does not make sense.

I heard a news report that stated he did not perform because he had retired from singing and this prevented him from doing so at the celebration. Give me a break!! Did his voice go away when he "retired"? I see that he was able to do nine concerts just before the event. What's up with that? Come on, Brooks, it's all about the money, isn't it? Oklahomans helped get you where you are today and you let them down. I know some people who went to school with Brooks at OSU and they said he was a jerk. I guess things haven't changed. I agree with Floyd. I think the commission would have made time for him.
The audience in the Ford Center were little more than set props for an OETA special. Card stunt?!? Glow sticks!?! If I'd known that 95% of this "show" wasn't going to be "concert", I would have save some big cash. The people upset they couldn't afford tickets should be relieved. This show sucked. Who cares about Rance Howard's horse? By the way, I'm not buying the "Garth signed when he was retired..." bit. Carrie Underwood was still an unknown two years ago, and she managed to find a way to make it happen!!!
I do not want to make anybody mad, but I watched the Centennial Spectacular and was not all that impressed.
Willard Scott went on way too long and to have Shirley Jones sing and not have Garth Brooks did not make any sense.
Ummmmmm.........probably because he can't sing......without a major effort from the producers at the mixing board........and only a mediocre guitar player....but, you have to admit....NO ONE can shake up a water bottle better....GO GARTH!
I can't believe that they couldn't (wouldn't) adjust the schedule to allow Garth Brooks to sing. Willard Scott rambled on for what seemed like hours. Ron Howard's dad talked a long time too. They could've cut one of Shirley Jones' numbers. And although I love Amy Grant, her connection to Oklahoma is pretty minor, compared to Garth Brooks'. Or they could've just added five minutes to the show.
