Surprise, surprise.

The Jenks-Tulsa Union Class 6A championship game will be played in Tulsa after all.

The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Tulsa's Chapman Stadium.

As late as 10 p.m. Saturday, officials from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association were told the stadium was unavailable.

A bit later Saturday night, though, after the conclusion of the Jenks-Midwest City semifinal game, the OSSAA's David Jackson received a phone call that indicated there was a possibility TU could host.

"It was a surprise to us,” Jackson said. "They were going to start tearing up the stadium (Monday).”

Chapman Stadium has hosted five of the last 11 Class 6A championship games since Jenks and Union began their stranglehold on the class with Jenks' win over Midwest City to take the 1996 title. The venue was initially unavailable because Tulsa planned to begin construction at the stadium immediately. But school officials talked to the contractor and pushed the start date back a week to accommodate the game.

"With those two there, it only made sense to play at Tulsa,” said OSSAA executive secretary Danny Rennels.

The game was originally planned to be played Saturday afternoon at the University of Oklahoma's Owen Field, with the 4A game kicking off Saturday night. Chapman Stadium's availability helped the OSSAA avoid all but one conflict with Saturday night's Big 12 Championship game in San Antonio.

The Class C game between Shattuck and Grandfield will be played at Mustang High on Saturday night.

Rennels said Mustang offered to host Friday night and Saturday night. The Class B game will be played Friday night at Mustang.

"Shattuck for sure wanted to come to Mustang and that was the only time open,” Rennels said. "They really liked that venue and coming to the city area.”

Rennels said there hasn't been much discussion of where to play next weekend's Class 2A and A championship games, but a new venue could be in the picture: Langston's Anderson Field.

"We're in good shape next week either way, with Choctaw and UCO being other possibilities,” Rennels said. "But there's a chance we could play a doubleheader at Langston depending on who's playing in those games.”
