Anderson on a roll
James Anderson is a month into his
Oklahoma State career and the freshman wing player has already scored at least 20 points five times this season, been named the
Big 12's Newcomer of the Week twice and reached double figures in all eight games.
The
Junction City, Ark., native has hit 25-of-52 3-pointers (48 percent) and is 53-of-102 (52 percent) from the floor.
"He is hot,”
OSU coach
Sean Sutton said, adding that every time Anderson shoots the ball "you expect it to go in.”
East Tennessee State coach
Murry Bartow was impressed Saturday night, bringing up the freshman without being asked. Anderson scored 26 against Bartow's Bucs.
"I love Anderson,” Bartow said. "Anderson's without question going to be in the
NBA. He really hurts ya. He's just hard to cover because he can hit 3s, plus he can slash and get to the rim. You've kinda got to pick your poison with him.”
•Around the league: Looking at conference statistics before conference play begins may be comparing apples and oranges, but here's a quick look at how OSU stacks up among Big 12 teams.
•The Cowboys have the second-most steals, averaging 10.5 per game.
Texas leads the league with an 11.2 average.
•OSU has the second-fewest assists, and ranks last in assist-to-turnover ratio with 99 assists and 129 turnovers.
•The Cowboys have the conference's fewest defensive rebounds with 152 (19 per game).
•OSU ranks third in made 3-pointers with 69 (8.6 per game). The Cowboys are second in the conference in free throw percentage at 72 percent.
•Holiday travel: Oklahoma State was tested early with a tough trip to the
Maui Invitational just before Thanksgiving. Against top tier teams, OSU had its weaknesses exploited pretty thoroughly.
Sutton clearly sees value in tough early tests as next year's Thanksgiving won't be terribly different. The Cowboys are scheduled to play in the Old Spice Classic next year.
