Fedora to be introduced as new Southern Miss coach tomorrow

By Mike Baldwin • Published: December 12, 2007
STILLWATER — Southern Mississippi has scheduled a press conference on Wednesday to announce Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora as its head coach, according to sources.

Fedora, 45, replaces Jeff Bower, who was forced to resign two weeks ago. Fedora has been viewed as the leading candidate since he first interviewed with USM athletic director Richard Giannini on Dec. 4. Fedora flew to Hattiesburg for a second interview last Friday.

The primary issue in negotiations was Fedora wanted the Golden Eagles to commit $1.2 million combined for his assistant coaches. Bower's staff this season made $800,000. Sources could not confirm whether USM officials met Fedora's demands.

Fedora is expected to begin recruiting immediately at Southern Mississippi. Giannini has announced Bower will coach Southern Mississippi in the Papajohns.com bowl Dec. 22 against Cincinnati.
