Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett is one heck of a salesman. And he genuinely believes in the quality of the product he's pitching.

That's turning the Ford Center into a top notch NBA facility, something voters will have the chance to approve on March 4 through a temporary one-cent sales tax to fund more than $100 million worth of improvements to the building, Cornett announced Thursday.

Under the plan, Cornett thinks Oklahoma City could have one of the best venues for NBA basketball at half the cost of the going rate.

"The improvements that we're talking about at the Ford Center will basically put it on par with the top tier of arenas in the league,” Cornett said. "This is not a refurbished Ford Center as much as it is a brand new arena when we're done.”

The possibility of the Seattle SuperSonics relocating to Oklahoma City hastened the city's plans for upgrading the Ford Center.

All improvements and the exact costs won't be known until the city's contracted architect firm, The Benham Companies, completes its study in the coming weeks.

Expected improvements include a practice facility; sit-down restaurants or clubs in the lower and upper levels of the arena where spectators could eat or drink and watch the gam
