Sumlin: Minority coaches progressing
Last week, the University of Houston named OU assistant Kevin Sumlin head coach, making him just the eighth minority coach in college football.

But even though that's less than 7 percent of college football coaches, Sumlin said he thinks college football is making progress.

"There's more pressure on schools to interview at least one minority candidate,” said Sumlin, who is black. "What happens is very often, guys out there in the interview process are what people would consider a token interview. But athletic directors talk about who you interviewed. They might not have hired you, but they might say, ‘This guy here is worth talking to, he's more than what we thought.' I don't think anyone wants anything forced on them. It's kind of subtle out there in college football people doing that, interviewing at least one minority candidate, and I think that's good.”

•LB Baker stays inspirational: OU outside linebacker Lewis Baker has been writing inspirational sayings on his taped wrists before every game.

"It's motivational stuff,” Baker said. "I always write U.S. Armed Forces on there because we want to be playing for them. I write religious stuff, the names of teammates who might not be playing because of injury. And family.”

•English's high school in state championship: Canadian High School, where OU defensive end Auston English attended, will be playing in Texas' Class 2A, Division II state championship this afternoon.

The Wildcats shocked No. 1-ranked Cisco 17-6 last weekend in the state semifinals to advance to their first state title game.

Canadian will play Elysian Fields at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.

•West Virginia QB White staying put: Mountaineers junior quarterback Pat White told reporters Thursday that he's staying at West Virginia regardless of who the next coach is. Freshman standout running back Noel Devine also said Thursday he won't transfer.

According to the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette, West Virginia officials have interviewed Florida associate head coach John "Doc" Holliday, Central Michigan head coach Butch Jones, former Auburn coach and ABC announcer Terry Bowden and Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett.
